Mac not recognising Cloud drive

I have an old Cloud home device which is no longer supported but I was led to understand that I would still be able to access the files locally. I have connected the device to my Mac via a usb cable but it is not showing up in Finder.

Try looking for it under Disk Utility if you don’t see it under Finder.

I know sometimes you may need a special cable that brings more juice to ‘turn on’ certain hard drives.

Thanks so much for your response. I had tried utility but no luck. Do you know what that special cable is called?

I don’t know exactly what device you have so not sure that you’ve tried.

You have the enclosure and HHD in it, you just tried to directly plug that into your computer? Some devices USB ports are only for input and not output.

If you can remove the HDD, maybe buy a hard drive enclosure off Amazon ($10 and usually 2.5") and try that. You should be able to access the files/harddrive directly.

I have the exact same issue and I’m flapping about losing photos on my old WD My Cloud drive. My old iMac was happily backing up photos to the drive but I’ve just changed to a new iMac and, yup, can’t connect to the drive. I’ve ordered an Ethernet to USB C device as the new iMacs only have USB C ports now so will see if connecting to the drive via an Ethernet cable will help. After that, I’m stuck as the suggestions above don’t make a lot of sense to me.
Thanks.

Cured my lack of connection issue with my new iMac. I bought a network to USB C adapter off Amazon. Plugged the adapter into the iMac and then ran a network cable from the adapter into the back of the WD My Cloud and - boom - instant connection!

Thanks, I’ll order one & try it.

I bought the Uni one. Comes in a nice drawstring soft bag😄. I noticed that if I removed the Ethernet cable I lost the connection, it wouldn’t connect just with the USB cable either for some reason. So no problem, I’ll just leave the Ethernet cable connected. In the meantime back up all the photo onto another device in case the WD My Cloud eventually packs in.

I have the same problem thank you very much I will order one also

This is unfortunately all misinformation for the My Cloud Home device. The My Cloud Home was never ‘no longer supported’ in 2022 as it is still very much supported in 2025.

The original thread and original post was false from the beginning. The original poster apparently did not know anything about the My Cloud Home.

@Habu63 appeared to have a completely different device and operating system than the My Cloud Home because direct ethernet connection has never been support in the My Cloud Home. Ethernet connection for the MC Home always required a DHCP and a static ip address is not supported.

This is the problem with posters replying with insufficient data in the wrong subforum with a claim about a different cloud storage device.

The My Cloud Home has always been distinct in hardware and software than any of the other WD My Cloud device.
