Issue restoring backup on new computer

I have a 2TB My Passport drive. I backed up my wife’s laptop, and I want to confirm I am able to get the files off in case the laptop stops working. I have used this article to attempt to do this.

When I get to step three, select the passport and hit next, it said there were no files backed up to be restored. Now when I run the application, it goes to the screen with three icons, Backup, Restore and About. If I click restore, it says “There are no files to restore. You have not scheduled a backup plan.”

I uninstalled/reinstalled and went through the article again. Now when I got to step 3 and hit next, the application simply closed and did not even give me a message about there not being a backup. Any ideas?
