Is Nas possible use via Wifi?

I have reviewed the literature, and unfortunately the reviews, on the WD line available.

While the My Cloud Home is the size and plug and play network install thru a mobile app that I am looking for, the limitations on direct access, incompatibility with 3rd party backup apps, and reliance on server connectivity do not, IMO, qualify it as a NAS.

What I am looking for is a small (by NAS standards) network attached Hard Drive that will easily install by ethernet via mobile app, can be mapped as a full file read\write access external network drive, can be locked out of remote access outside the local network, and can be used by any app I have for backing up and saving data.

At $400, the EX2 Ultra is out of range and still doesn’t provide the features desired.

You can certainly set up a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device using an Ethernet cable initially and then move it to a location closer to your desk and connect to it wirelessly. This should work without any major issues, but there are some considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Initial Configuration: Setting up the NAS through an Ethernet connection is usually the easiest and most reliable method. Make sure you configure the NAS properly during this initial setup phase.
  2. Wireless Connectivity: When you move the NAS to a wireless location, ensure that it can connect to your Wi-Fi network. Check the signal strength and quality to ensure a stable connection.
  3. Streaming Performance: Streaming movies over a wireless connection from a NAS can work well, but it depends on several factors:
  • Wi-Fi Speed: Ensure that your Wi-Fi network is fast enough to handle streaming. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi network is generally better for streaming than a 2.4 GHz network.
  • NAS Performance: The NAS should have sufficient processing power and network speed to handle streaming. Most modern NAS devices are capable of this, but older or lower-end models may struggle with high-definition video.
  • File Format and Bitrate: The format and bitrate of the video files you are streaming can impact performance. High-quality, high-bitrate videos may require a faster network.
  • Wireless Interference: Interference from other devices or obstacles like walls can affect Wi-Fi performance. Ensure a clear line of sight between your NAS and router if possible.
  1. Network Security: When using a wireless connection, ensure that your NAS and Wi-Fi network are secured with strong passwords and encryption to prevent unauthorized access.
  2. Storage Capacity: Depending on the size of your movie collection, make sure your NAS has enough storage space to accommodate your files.
  3. Backup: Consider setting up a backup solution for your NAS, especially if it contains important data or media files. Regularly back up the NAS to another device or cloud storage.

In most cases, streaming movies from a NAS over a wireless connection should work fine as long as your network and NAS meet the necessary requirements. However, the actual performance may vary depending on the factors mentioned above. If you experience issues, consider upgrading your network hardware or adjusting settings to optimize performance.

What WD device do you own or other dealers NAS that works over wi-fi and does not need to be connected by ethernet cable after setting it up?

This topic is about the My Cloud Home. The below information comes from the User Manual for the My Cloud Home.

Internet Connectivity :black_small_square:My Cloud Home devices must be connected to the Internet. They should be connected to an available router through the included Ethernet connection. (This is not a Wi-Fi® device.) Gigabit capability for the router or switch is recommended to maximize performance. The router requires a Broadband (WAN) Internet connection with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for initial setup, software downloads and for accessing the device.
