I didn't see this in a FAQ section... credentials for network mapping

So, I’ve read the  How to map a WD My Cloud or NAS product on a Windows PC page a couple times over, and the bit that I get hung up on is where it says:

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but the first link doesn’t seem to work. There also doesn’t seem to be anything in the dashboard about it. I know my username and I know my password as it’s listed under “Users”, and I have the share set up how I want it. My Windows 8.1 computer, however, wants me to specify a domain for the username. I tried “XusernameX”, “\WDMYCLOUD\XusernameX”, and “WDMYCLOUD\XusernameX”.

I’m likely not the first one with this issue, and I bet I missed it in the documentation… but I’d appreciate a suggestion or solution (or even the proper article to read).

It also stands to note, I am able to map my Public share as a z: drive. It’s easy enough since there’s no credentials. I’d like to have my XprivateshareX mapped too, but it does require credentials.

GOT IT!!!

So, it was way easier than I’d made it out to be.

In the dashboard, when you make XusernameX and XpasswordX these are the credentials you use. Do not worry about domain, because when Windows prompts you for username it should be in the following format:

  • \XusernameX
  • XpasswordX

I swear I tried absolutely every other combination before arriving at the simple answer. Maybe there’s a spot in the FAQ for this?

It should be noted that generally one does not typically have to put "" or “\” or “\<wd my cloud user>”  or “\<wd my cloud user>” depending on their computer, OS, and network configuration. Under certain circumstances one does. Could the support document be better? Yes. In general on the Windows OS if one has trouble reaching a network device that requires a username and password to log in they often have to use the following for the user name: “\<wd my cloud user>”  or “\<wd my cloud user>”.
