How do you tell the difference Gen 1 or 2

I understand that there are two versions of the WD TV Media Player a Gen 1 and a Gen 2

Can you identify the different model by just looking at it ?

And what are the differences beween the models in playing media ?

Yes, by looking at the part number label.

WDBABFxxxx = GEN2

WDAVN00xxxx= GEN1.

The major difference is that the Gen1 is not licenced to downmix DTS.

If you have DTS audio in a media file, it will pass through to the Optical output, for decoding on an external receiver, but a Gen1 will not mixdown the DTS track to the stereo RCA jacks.

A Gen2 does have the DTS licencing, and can mix DTS audio down to stereo audio.

Other than that, they basically both play the exact same codec set… if a file will play on one, it will generally play on the other.

interestingly, the Gen2 seemed to have teething problems… I believe many of the issues did get sorted with firmware updates, but when it first came out, there were many posts about the Gen1 being “better”, aside from the DTS issue which can be easily avoided.

Actually, Tony… I’ve already been through that once… his is AV_ P , not AV N _, because it’s a PAL box, not NTSC.  :wink:
