How do I get this to backup to the cloud?

I have several things going on. First, I am able to store files on the MyCloud network drive, but when I log into the web app the files don’t appear there. I was hoping to have everything I saved on the drive automatically backed up to the cloud.

I followed instructions for “local network access” (I’m not even sure if thats what I need) and when I click on “Manage Device” it gives me an error message saying i need to be connected to the same local network. I only have one network in my home, the drive is hooked up via ethernet and the computer is using the wifi signal.

Thanks in advance!

First of all, having a MyCloud doesn’t mean you get to upload things to the ‘Cloud’. The device itself is your Cloud. Whatever you want to access through the internet (Cloud), has to reach the NAS.

To be able to access the share outside of your local network, you need to enable this in the Shares settings > Shares > Share Access > Mobile & Web App Access

You are on the right track and on the right subforum, but you should refer to your device as the My Cloud Home (MCH) rather than the ‘My Cloud’ because that ‘My Cloud’ is a an ecosystem of whole different operating systems which offers many different functionalities that the MCH does not support - for example the suggestion by JR would not work because there is no such setting in the MCH.

What you described below is through no fault of your own as you followed the correct instructions, the MCH (browser) Webapp often makes a mistake in determining whether the network is in ‘Relay’, ‘Direct’ or ‘Local’ mode. Only in the ‘Local’ mode can the ‘enable local access’ of the MCH be accessible.

You may be able to try this suggestion from back in December, 2022 when ‘enable local access’ first became available with the then new 8.12 firmware, however it does not always work and the Webapp refuses to change to ‘Local’ access. So this is buggy software - there may be other ways of forcing the Webapp to see the network as local, but that requires putting the MCH into direct cable connection mode or alternatively changing the local router UPNP setting.

This is the UPnP way to enable local access.

While Western Digital Technical Support does not provide information on router UPnP support or instructions on how to enable UPnP on 3rd party routers
This knowledge is still required in order for ‘enable Local access to work’ in many home networks.

On many home routers, it is just a matter of turning on UPnP automatic firewall rules generation - there is no need to set the public or private ports specifically.
