Has anyone purchased GoodSync for use with their My Cloud NAS?

We’re using GoodSync to synchronize files between Windows systems and a WD “My Cloud” NAS without issue. We’re considering purchasing GoodSync because we would like to be able to synchronize multiple folders to different locations, on the NAS, and I believe we need multiple “jobs” to accomplish this. The free version of GoodSync we’re allowed to use supports only one “job” so we’re limited on the synchronization options.

Has anyone here purchased GoodSync to use with a “My Cloud” NAS? If so, what has your experience been with it?

Thanks in advance!

Peace…

So, I just found out by virtue of us using GoodSync for free, as part of the deal between Western Digital and the GoodSync developer, that if I wanted to purchase the client, I would also need to purchase a license for the server running on the “My Cloud” NAS. They want $500/yr (with a price schedule if licensing for more than one year).

All I want is to be able to synchronize to more than one location on the NAS, something I was able to do with the old Western Digital software. :frowning:

Peace…

Are you syncing files to a remote network My Cloud? If not, if all the computers you want to sync to the My cloud are on the same local network then pretty much any sync software should work. For example Free File Sync (https://freefilesync.org/) is one some of us use that can sync to as many folders/shares on the local network My Cloud as one wants. For mobile syncing there are probably similar apps for mobile devices that will do the same to a local network My Cloud.

Yes. Sometimes, we sync files on laptops not in the office with the My Cloud NAS that’s in the office. That’s how we started using the NAS with the old, Western Digital software, and after the change to GoodSync, I implemented that in same functionality in GoodSync.

Do you absolutely need the Goodsync Server? Or can you get by with the paid Personal client version that provides unlimited files and unlimited Goodsync jobs? The Personal paid version is $29.95 per year and supports up to 5 computers/devices.

Otherwise you’ll have to look at other sync software and remote access options (like VPN, SFTP or other secure methods of remote access).

I’m not 100% sure but I think I need the GoodSync server because the server is running on the NAS. I think the GoodSync client uses “GoodSync Connect” to connect to the server, running on the NAS, and then synchronizes the files in the related folders. If the GoodSync server isn’t running on the “My Cloud” NAS (I’m running OS5 on the NAS), I’m not sure what the GoodSync client would connect to, when the laptop is outside of the office and not connected to the LAN. A VPN connection might be worth investigating. If the system is connected to the LAN via VPN, Windows networking can be used to provide access to the shares on the NAS.

Let me give that some thought.

If you haven’t done so already review the various WD Knowledge Base articles on Goodsyc. Here are some of them.

Install GoodSync App

Important:

  • Installs a 30-day trial version of GoodSync for NAS unless used with GoodSync for WD Free version.
  • A GoodSync license purchase is required after the trial period has expired unless used with GoodSync for WD Free version.

Thanks for posting the links. I’ve read those articles and THIS article:

https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/26624#subject3

identifies the issue. If you look at step #6, that is what you see after installing the “GoodSync app for NAS”, as it’s called above. That application is the “GoodSync Server” and GoodSync wants $500/yr for that, IF I purchase the GoodSync workstation client for Windows. Crazypants.

Not too mention, I have a support ticket open for the “GoodSync Server” where file and folder permissions are not set correctly if the file or folder is created on the NAS by the GoodSync server. That ticket was opened in January of 2022 and IS STILL OPEN. Support has almost completely stopped posting updates. It’s truly insane and disheartening. I mean I’m trying to “play ball” here and I keep hitting obstacle after obstacle.

Thanks again for your efforts to help!
