Hi
Newbie here with limited tech knowledge, so looking for as simple an answer as possible.
I have a Mybook live and saved all our music on it so I could clear hard drive on computer. After much hair pulling I managed to transfer th itunes library file to the shared music folder on the mybook.
However, my wife has just got an iphone 5 (we’ve never had anything apple before) and I assumed (ha!) it would be a simple case of telling the iphone to use (over wifi) the library file on the mybook as well, but I cannot find anyway of doing this.
I have the WDtogo app installed, but that is a bit long-winded in order to play the music and does not have the playlists there.
I have installed the Remote App on the iphone and managed to get the music playing on the iphone by using the home sharing facility in itunes, but if I have to do that each time it kind of defeats the purpose. I want to be able to play music through the iphone via the my book without having to turn on a computer.
Reason is that she only has a 16gb phone and the music files are considerably larger than that and so do not want to/cannot simply sync the whole lot across. (She could just put on a few that she wanted when she was out and about).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, that’s just the way Apple has decided to make it work.
You cannot use iTunes servers directly from the iOS devices; you must have a PC or Mac running iTunes on your network.
My suggestion (and is what I did) is to use Apple’s cloud service for all the music. It works well, and you’ll have access to your entire library from anywhere in the world.
Thank you. I suspected that was going to be the case.Defeats the point of having the NAS drive really, but hey ho.
Is there not a media player app that will work alongside WDtogo to use the shared music from the NAS?
Due to the size of the music files and the fact that none of it was bought through itunes (all copied from our own cds), using the the icloud for everything would mean buying more storage and putting more money in Apple’s pocket. Also, an awful lot of it is made up of the kids’ spoken word cds, which the itunes match service wouldn’t pick up.

No along with the WDtogo, however, there should be plenty of media streaming apps.
MBL has a media player server you can run and setup. Depeding on the firmware, sometimes you will have two, Twonky and WD Media.
If you want to go that route, go ahead and set it up via the dashboard, also check the manual.
For the Iphone, here are some quick results I found…
