G-Raid won't mount unless thunderbolt cable is plugged in after power is turned on

The only way it mounts is from the computer being totally off and booting up or if the computer is on, powering the unit on with the thunderbolt cable out and then plugging the cable in after the drives spin up. I can’t mount it with the thunderbolt cable in and pushing the power on like any other drive. Yes it works but it’s annoying and over time the thunderbolt plug will fail or the port will fail from over use. Running on an iMac 15,1 on OS X 10.11.6

Anyone else have this?

We haven’t had that issue brought to us before. Does your G-RAID also have USB? Have you tried with that interface and does it react the same way? How old is your drive?
