G-RAID 8TB (4th Gen)

Hi friends,

I have the following problem and I would much appreciate your help on that! I got a G-RAID 8TB (4th Gen) back in 2012. I had it always in RAID 0 configuration. It was working perfectly until very recently when I started seeing some weird reactions. Apple rainbow wheel sniping randomly and I “tak” sound looping every few seconds. Eventually it would “find” the lost pieces in the drive and open the file I did double click and things where back to normal. This situation lasted for couple of weeks, I was feeling that it was dying so I was backing up regularly. After a while it was not even mounting.

I emailed g-tech and obviously told me that I’m out of warranty and the were TOTALLY USELESS and unprofessional dealing with my problem.

Anyway, the thing is that the drives work perfectly separately but do not work at all when being together in a RAID 0 configuration. So basically can someone tell me if the drives themselves hold any information/software for permitting RAID configurations? Because the same happens even if I put them in another chassis. So they must have something in them. If yes, is there a way to fix that now and get back to normal or I can only use the drives separately and never in a RAID 0 configuration?

The G-RAID drive from that era, is a hardware locked RAID0 device. It will only work if both drives are present in the enclosure. If one of the drives have started to fail (clicking noises and performance loss like you were mentioning) then the entire unit would be at a loss because it requires both. That being said if you were to open the enclosure and remove the drives, the working drive would of course still work after a format. The drive that was causing the failure would be a bad drive and need to be replaced.

There is nothing on the drives that tell them to work in a specific enclosure, they are controlled once in the enclosure by the RAID controller included. The drives will work independently of each other and the enclosure if they are healthy drives.

Thank you very much for your help and time Rydia! Very helpful and now everything makes more sense! Thank you!
