FW update and other stuff

I just picked up my Live a couple of weeks ago, and got lucky and dodged the bad FW nightmare.  So far I’m liking my drive a lot - the app access via wd2go and wdphoto is very slick.  Haven’t set up backups yet so we’ll see how that goes but had no problem making users, shares, and getting visibility on my network.  However, after the update I notice a couple of things that seem to have gone down hill:

  1. LED now goes out (no light at all) for long periods of time.  Previously it would go straight from green to blue or versa-vice when changing state.  Don’t really like the “out” state.  Anyone else experiencing this?  FW guys, did you goof something up?

  2. Drive seems to be way more active than previous, even in the morning when no one has been on it for hours.  Makes me nervous some hacker has found it and is messing w/it.  Anyone seeing this, and how can I tell what the heck it is doing?

  3. When I first plugged the drive in all I could see from my Win7 machines was the public share (also all I could see in the dashboard).  After the update there are Smartbackup and TimeMachine shares that are visible in the dashboard and on the network.  I kind of liked not seeing these for security reasons, and especially not seeing TimeMachine since we don’t have any apple devices and will never use it.  I disabled it in dashboard but the share is still there.  How can I make these invisible?

Thanks,

Joe

  1.  There’s a hardware issue on some of the MBLS (I have no idea how new or old or whatever) Lots of people (including myself) have MBLs with bad LEDs.   Doesn’t bother me one bit – I never look at the drive.

  2. If you just upgraded the MBL firmware, it’s probably re-indexing the drive.

  3. Those other shares were always there - they were just hidden.   Anyone could get to them before, as well – the names are well-known.  But LOTS of people asked to make them UNHIDDEN, so WD did what was requested.  ;)   There’s no additional security risk…

I’m not sure if there’s a way to re-hide them or not…

You can make those shares private or even delete them if you wanted.

The thing about the LED is, it was working before the FW update.  Seems like I’ve seen other folks here commenting on the same.  WD FW guys, is there a known issue w/this update?  If so, any chance of getting a fix soon?  Somehow it made me happy seeing that nice blue light and knowing my drive was happy and sound asleep …

Regarding how the drive seems to be churning, it’s been over 12 hours since I updated, I would think it would be done reindexing by now?  I do have a lot of files tho - 350GB worth.

So I did make them both private but don’t all users still need to see the SmartWare share to do backups?  If not I’ll just remove them from the acces list.

If I delete the timemachine share (which I’m inclined to do), will the FW recreate it if I ever get an apple device and want to use time machine?  (unlikely, but still …  )

Thanks,

Joe

The latest Smartware can backup to any share you choose. It does not have to be in the smartware backup share.

With this latest firmware, you can also choose what share you want Time Machine to use, so yes you coul recreate a share called Time Machine when you buy the new Mac.

So I’m deleting the tm share, leaving the smartware asis.

What about the LED?  It never went off before the update …

btw you’re far too confident that i’ll be buying a mac any time soon … !  ;-)

re: new Mac - haha- well one can hope (yes - I am a convert).

With regards to your LED not working, it sounds like it could be out. You can contact our support group if you like to get a replacement. The new firmware had nothing to do with the LED going out - probably just coincidental.

mac - never.  never!  ;-)

the issue w/the led isn’t that it’s dead, but that it turns off for long periods of time.  when it’s active the light will flash green, but then suddenly just turn off … then come back on a while later.  i did not observe this behavior prior to the update.  not sure if it goes blue when the drive is asleep, since it seems like it’s been churning ever since the update.

It’s a tri-color LED…  Could be that the blue element is out but the green still works…

possible explanation - didn’t realize this but it seems the device is re cataloging my entire photo database, of ~44,000 pictures.  i realized this when i opened wd photos on my phone and noticed many pictures were missing, then realized the count was slowing increasing.  last time it took 3-4 days to do this, so i guess until then the drive will be churning and not able to go to the sleep state.  we’ll see then if the blue light comes on.

why does it need to do this?  i would think it could at least leave the old database in place, and just add to it if it finds anything it missed w/the last  fw version.
