FTP setup help

Just tried to enable & setup FTP on the drive following the instructions on WD site…

I get as far as switching the FTP on the device… but then nothing happens - no port forwarding box comes up.

Any ideas ??

I have been using this guide: Steps to Turn On and Setup FTP Server Access on My Cloud

You don’t do port forwarding on the My Cloud, you do port forwarding on your network router. FTP’s default port is 21. Just port forward port 21 to the My Cloud in your router. For local FTP access you do not need port forwarding. Only for remote FTP access does one need to enable port forwarding within the router.

That knowledgebase article certainly shows a port forwarding dialogue in the Dashboard.

I do notice that it is the gen2/v2 firmware Dashboard, though (Backup, not Safepoint in the main tab menu). My gen1/v4 doesn’t have those settings.

It’s possible that those settings don’t exist on the basic MyCloud of either generation, but are taken from Mirror or higher products in the family.

[edit] The user manuals suggest the dialogue is present in Mirror devices, but not in the basic MyCloud.

It may show it but it would either be wrong or incorrect at least for the single bay My Cloud units. Shocking I know that there would be incorrect information in the knowledgebase or in the user manual.

For the original poster, port forwarding is typically done at the router to pass specific ports through the router firewall.

I assume that WD is giving the user (on the more expensive multi bay My Cloud units) the option to configure the FTP port to an alternate port than the default/standard port 21 that is typically used for FTP .

Yeah, that would be unheard of…

Just like Support giving incorrect advice…
