Creating Share on Connected USB Drive

Is it possible to create a share on a connected USB drive? My goal is to use this share for internal incremental backups.

You should read the My Cloud User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25) which has an entire chapter chapter covering attaching a USB hard drive to the My Cloud. See Chapter 12 Connecting a USB Hard Drive.

When you attach the external USB drive to the My Cloud USB port the My Cloud should create a Share named after the USB drive. One can then configure that Share just like any other Share via the My Cloud Dashboard > Share page.

In addition to @Bennor’s advice you may also use a file browser to access the connected device.

Yes…I’ve read the manual. The connected USB shows up as a share. However, when I try to set up an internal backup, it does not show up under the available folder under destination folder

TIFF image you posted not showing up in my web browser (Firefox). Better to use JPG, GIF or PNG when posting images.

What does “internal backup” mean? Safepoint / Backup? If not Safepoint / Backup then what are you backing up (from where to where) using what program, software or application is the backup going across the local network or across a remote connection?

Have you check to see if the Share shows up in Mac Finder or Windows File Explorer? If the Share shows up in Finder/File Explorer then its a problem with your backup program. If the Share does not show up then perhaps you need to access the Dashboard > Settings > Cloud Access and set USB Content Availability to ON. When the USB Content Availability option is set to ON, the Dashboard > Home > Capacity field will include the USB drive in the total Free Space value. Videos, Photos, Music Tracks, Other values may/will also include content from the USB drive.

To address your questions:

  1. I’m doing a Safepoint backup. I’m choosing Internal Backup. When I choose destination folder, the connected USB drive does not appear.

  2. Yes, the connected USB drive shows up in Finder

  3. Yes, USB Content Availability is enabled

Not sure what “Internal Backup” is. When I setup a new Safepoint, with the single bay v04.04.03-113 firmware, I am presented with the following screen first. I select “Local USB” then proceed through the rest of the steps.
