Could not reset the server to factory default settings error 0x80070241

I have been unable to recover my server.  I wasn’t really having that many issues before trying to recover.  Atleast nothing that would explain my current problem.  I have tried the non destructive recovery that doesn’t delete your data.  Tried that twice with the same error code.  Then gave in and tried to full recovery which erases everything.  Same error code.  I’m pretty sure it gets past formatting the hard drives.  In the non destructive recovery it would get to about 3/4 the way done before failing.  The error code is. 0x80070241.

Could not reset the server to factory default settings

Your server was not reset to factory default settings.  Resolve the issue, and then restart the server recovery process.

     Error code: 0x80070241

Any help would be greatly appreciated it.  I will try and contact western digital today and post back what I learn.

The little bit I can find on this error points to a bad iso.  Might have to download recovery image again :frowning:

That might explain it.  I’ve actually already downloaded the iso twice the first time it was definetly corrupt as I was unable to create a USB restore disk.  Once I redownloaded it I was then able to create the disk.  I will try downloading the iso again on a different computer.  I called WD and they said they had to elevate it to a level two technician so I have to wait for a call back.  I have the 4TB model that I upgraded to 8TB and the tech indicated I may need to remove the drives that didn’t come with the device and try the restore again.  I will try these steps and report back.  Thanks for looking into it for me.

I was leaning toward a bad download myself.  Try chrome instead of IE.

Do not remove the new/extra drives.

You are simply mounting the ISO, as in you are not trying to burn a dvd and run it from DVD?

hi,

elsewhere i had problems with SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB 2.0 Sticks, with the same ISO and Lexar Sticks for recovery it worked well. Also USB 3.0 Sticks didn’t work.

greetings

ulti

I tried the recovery again twice last night.  Even with the new ISO I am having the same issue.  It could be a jump drive issue.  The only non USB3 drive I have that is big enough is a PNY 16GB.  Still no luck.  I will have to give WD tech support another call. I may pull the drives and try to test each with WD Data Diagnostic.

You might try this.  Set your desktop to DHCP and plug the cat5 cable straight into the DX.  Reboot your desktop and boot the DX with the thumb.  I have overcome desktop restore failures this way.  They both get an auto config ip and can talk to each other and do not have to worry about the switch dropping stuff.

You might look in the log file in the wd folder of the thumb drive.

If recovery starts as you say it does, I do not see the need to recreate storage.  Though if all else is failing, you might do that and check the log file on that drive for happy happy happy

PS:  FWIW, I am Gramps.  Just noticed I am logged in with my other account

Boy Grey knows his stuff, must be my twin.  That is what I was going to say LOL

Well, I downloaded another copy of the iso on another computer using Chrome.  Created the jump drive and followed Gramps instructions on connecting the computer directly to the Sentinel.  Now when I hold the reset button down and it Initializes the recovery.  Eventually it says Loading Recoverying and a few  seconds later it says STORAGE BAD.  I have tried a different jump drive and multiple iso’s.  I pulled each drive and ran Data Lifeguard Diagnostic all passed the SMART test.  I have not ran sector scans due to the size of the drives.  WD is supposed to be calling me back today sometime.  The  level 2 tech indicated that he would be able to send the Recovery ISO directly to me to see if something is getting corrupted during download.  i’m starting to run out of ideas.

I should have searched the forum before replying.  I found a discussion on the STORAGE BAD error.  Attempting to recreate storage now.

correct, you need to do that recreate storage.  When it is done look at the log file in the wd folder.  The LCD may say Happy, but the log file tells the truth at the end.

If you like you can post the contents of the log file back.  I am going to eat BBQ in a couple of hours, so be back in about 4.  If the log looks ok you can go ahead and try the recovery

We CAN do this :)  Worst cas is we have to rwemove all the drives and clean them in another box, but we can get it back !

Was able to recreate storage now it will get the Start Recovery screen again.  Still fails everytime with same error code.  Tried connecting directly to the box.  Tried redownloading the ISO again.  Tried every jump drive I have.  Still no luck.  Probaby going to have to wait until I hear back from Western Digital.

And you are mounting the iso to a drive letter, not burning a DVD or simply opening the iso?
Log file on recreate storage said nothing trange?

Definetly mounting the iso.  I have tried on different computers.  Even tried different virtual cdrom programs.  Currently using Daemon tools.

The log is gigantic. Are you sure you want me to post it on here.  Maybe email or pm?

I do have access to another windows computer and could slave the drives and format them if need be.  I just don’t think the driver are the issue.  If i do the full format recovery it gets past the formatting part and fails later on during the actual install.

The last 20 lines of the log file should do

Grasping at straws

Av off on desktop?

All that said I know it is no help.  What took me 4 months to figure out, I started with 4 drives and tried to recover to 2.  Recreate storage said it worked on the LCD, but recovery would always fail.  I finally found the recreate log file and saw where it was still trying to do raid 5 with just 2 drives.

SO I took the drives out and ran dispart clean, recreate completed succesfully and then restore went fine.  I know I saw raid level in my recreate log and I just don’t see it in yours.  I said for you to keep all 4 drives cause I was afraid you would have the same problem I had dropping back to 2.  But it is possible your migrated to raid 5 is confusing it.

So my guess at what to try next, can;t be any more broken than it is, is to pick 2 drives and put them one at a time in another box and either run diskpart and clean the drives or perhaps you can acomplish this in diskmanager gui.  I guess initialize and format.

Then put only these two drives in and do recreate, look at the log then recover.  Note I am preety sure you need to recreate the recreate usb drive each time.  It used to delete some xml file when it ran and then it would not work again.  They may have fixed that though.

As I type, it occured to me that I suppose if you cleaned all 4 drives, you could/should be able to just make a new recreate thumb and use all 4 drives.

Long story short, erase clean all the drives and do a fresh start
