Certificate Trouble

Thanks to you too for your reply. I asked the firt person that answered that what is “File Browser” or how do I access that, beacuse I dont understand that term. If you could answer too, it will be good. I understood the mapping thing because I have done that, and I remember that term.

Im a Civil Engineer I have not a lot of knoledge in networks and systems, just what I investigate sometimes.

Thanks!

A file browser is a program running on your computer that allows you to navigate around the folders and files on your computer system. It’s usually built in to the operating system, because it’s considered an almost essential tool for using a computer.

On Windows, it’s called ‘File Explorer’ or ‘Windows Explorer’.  On Macs, it’s called ‘Finder’.  If you can see an icon of a disk drive or file folder on your desktop, and you double-click it, it will open your file browser. I’m sure it will be instantly familiar to you; it’s just the name that’s caught you out…

P21 of the user manual onwards explains how to ‘map’ your drive into your computer’s file system.

Now, so, to sum it up, could you tell me if there is a way to get rid of these pop up windows? If there is no way to get rid of these, wich alternatives do I have to see and upload files? For example I tested Using IE browser, but it was very slow when uploading compared to the time it took me to upload a file via WD My Cloud Desktop App. Another option may be using FTP, have you done that? Any other option to see and upload so that I dont have any trouble with these opo up messages?

If your trying to access the WD My Cloud remotely (ie off site) with your computer or laptop then probably not. At least not easily. Remote access, from one’s computer, generally relies on either the WD My Cloud Desktop application/software or going through the WD2Go.com website. Both will generate popups warning, of either certificate or Java security.

While you can configure the WD My Cloud for FTP access, FTP is generally not very secure (for a variety of reasons) when accessing the WD My Cloud from a remote or off site location.

On one’s local network where they can access their WD My Cloud locally there is typically no need to use the WD My Cloud Desktop application/software as one can use Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) or its equivalent on the Macintosh or Linux to access, browse and copy to and from the WD My Cloud. One can “map” the WD My Cloud to their computer so it appears as another storage device.

Any file uploading or downloading speed issues from remote or off site locations are typically and generally caused by the broadband upload speed at both ends of the connection. For quite a few internet users their download speed is much faster than their upload speed.

While I do find the warning message popups annoying I’ve pretty much come to live with it when using my computer to access the My Cloud remotely. More often then not I’m using either a smartphone or tablet to access the My Cloud remotely. Neither the WD My Cloud app or WD Photo app for Android generate the warning messages I see on the Windows computer.

If you have not yet read the WD My Cloud User Manual/Guide, I recommend it. It explains how to access the WD My Cloud both locally and remotely. It also details how to “map” the My Cloud to your computer for quicker/easier access when on your local network.

I’m not sure why WD can’t get a certificate issued for their s/w.

Probably a cost issue and the fact that locally one isn’t going through the WD2Go.com website. Generally web site certificates are tied to the URL/site name. And with the WD My Cloud one can change the device/network/URL name. For what ever reason they are using the certifiate from WD2Go.com even though one is accessing their WD My Cloud locally (not through the WD2Go.com website).

The bottom line is that of the three dialog boxes that generally appear when using the WD My Cloud Desktop app in its default configuration, one can get rid of two of the dialog boxes by selecting “Don’t show this message again” on each of the dialog boxs.

at PJP: If you’re still around, HOW do you use WD to back up you Mac?

One can use Apples Time Machine to backup to the My Cloud. See the My Cloud User Manual (WD Documentation) Chapter 4, Backing Up and Retrieving Files, Using Apple Time Machine.

Or see the following WD Support document:

Hi Bennor,
I’ve tried many times, following the directions from WD and Apple but inevitably, I get the following message from Time Machine after a few backups:
Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on “WDMyCloudMirror”. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.
I’m using a macbook pro and os 10.11.5
Are you really getting Time Machine to backup with no problems? If so, I really need to find out how you’re making it work.

I set my wife’s MAC to use Time Machine with WD My Cloud as the target. For the first backup I connected the MAC via ethernet. I have Time Machine configured to back up to WD only when the MAC’s plugged in. After the first backup the MAC connects via our WIFI router so it’s totally painless for my wife. Additionally I configured My Cloud to to make SafePoints at 3am.

I don’t use a Mac, but the error your seeing is a common one apparently that affects many different NAS and other backup devices. Here is one such thread over on Apple’s support site (if you haven’t see it already) that goes back to 2012 with your issue.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4207296

There is also this Apple doc: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH11310?locale=en_US

This link may also be relevant: http://pondini.org/TM/C13.html

And this link:
https://community.wd.com/t/more-time-machine-errors/92548

And finally this link from 2011 may have a potential workaround:
http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-based-backup-errors.html

The info at garth.org isn’t a workaround, it’s a way to try and fix an otherwise ruined backup. Not only does it take a really LONG time, it doesn’t always work.

Hi PJP,
Thank you for your reply. Maybe the initial ethernet backup made a difference, but seems unlikely. I couldn’t find the safepoint setting on my WD Mirror, so I"m guessing that it is only a feature on MyCloud, not MCMirror.
Anyway, thanks for your help.

Safepoint is renamed to the more conventional ‘Backup’ on Gen2 MyCloud.

Hi Bennor,
thank you for taking the time to try to help me with all the links. I’ve read through them all and the bottom line is that Time Machine simply does not work reliably with WD MyCloud devices or many other networked storage including Apple’s own Time Capsule. Although this appears to be an Apple problem, it seems that WD should not sell their devices under the premise that they are compatible with Time Machine. They simply are not, and that leaves me, and many others, frustrated and angry, with no recourse and several hundred wasted dollars.
I’m grateful for your help. This stuff is not supposed to take hours from one’s life to figure out. I’m going back to a usb drive backup and forget using my WD Mirror for backing up. Really disappointed.

You could switch to a more reliable backup tool.

I use FreeFileSync. It works on Macs, too, I understand (I use PCs).

It should be noted that others do not have a problem using Time Machine with a My Cloud. It appears that prior to Apple’s El Capitan there were not as many problems with Apple OS and the My Cloud.

If Time Machine isn’t working then try a third party backup program. Here is a listing of other free backup programs. Some of them may not have Mac OS versions however.

EaseUS Todo Backup Free: http://www.easeus.com/
Macrium Reflect Free: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
Paragon Backup and Recovery 14 Free: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/download.html
Free File Sync (in Mirroring mode): http://www.freefilesync.org/

Well, the MyCloud is compatible with Time Machine in that it’s no buggier than Apple’s own backup products.

If you click on View Certificate, click on Install Certificate, and accept default location, you will not see the certificate warning the next time you run the WD My Cloud program; or at least I do not see it any more.

Win 7 Pro 64-bit
WD My Cloud 1.0.7.17

Seems my statement was not entirely true. I have two MyCloud devices, one local and one remote. The certificate no longer comes up when connecting to the local device (i.e. not using www.mycloud.com/wd2go.com), but it still does if the last device I was connected to is the remote device. I should have caught that before posting the other reply.

I too would like for this certificate warning to go away.

Fix is here

Fixed permanently.
