Certificate Trouble

Hi.

I have installed WD My Cloud on a Win 7 ultimate. I have the latest version of Java 8 Update 45, I hace in my Win 7 ultimate the right Date and time. I have enabled the NPAPI in the setting of my Chrome browser.

I still have the problem, that each time I click on something in the “WD My Cloud” software i get 2 types of “Certificate” messagges that come up very often.

I will translate the idea of this two messagges. One of them it says: “Security Alert  - The information of the security certificate of this site it is not available, wish to continue?”

The other messagge says: “Security Alert - This page needs a safew connection that includes server authentification. The source of the certificate it is not trustable for this site or it is unkown, wish to continue?”

Now, I have installed the certificates of these two alerts but they keep appearing every time I click a folder or when I create one, etc. Please WD help me.

Thanks!

Those certificate warnings are normal when using the WD My Cloud Desktop application. Usually you get a warning message first in the WD My Cloud Desktop application, see below for an example, that tells you you will get those certificate warning messages unless you’ve elected to hide the Security Alert Info screen by selecting “Don’t show this message again”.

Edit to add: Also the  WD My Cloud user manual does mention that Security Alert Info screen on page 19 under “Using the WD My Cloud for Desktop App”.

IMO Certificate warnings are anything but normal; they are most certainly are a DISTRACTION!

In this case they are presented when using the application which is poorly implemented.

They occur because of the very nature of trusted and untrusted security certificates in a web environment, in this case the certificate is from WD2Go.com. As my post indicates the warnings are normal. Normal_ _in the sense that it is the normal operating procedure for the software to show the warning message. The software even warns the user, on that secuirty alert info screen, that they will see the certificate warning. Further that software alert info screen informs the user why they are seeing it and even indicates a possible way (which doesn’t appear to work for me) to prevent such certificate warnings from occurring in the future.

Are they a distraction? Yes. Is it a result of poorly written software? Possibly. But the fact remains these certificate warning message are standard with this particular software application. Don’t like it? The solution is easy, don’t use the WD My Cloud Desktop app software. Normally I don’t use the WD My Cloud Desktop app, I use Windows Explorer or similar on my computers that are connected locally to the WD My Cloud. For remote (or offsite) connection one can always bypass the WD My Cloud Desktop app and use the WD2Go.com site to acess their My Cloud contents remotely (or offsite). Note however that even using the WD2Go.com site you may receive similar warning messages (usually Java warning messages).

I refuse to use MC as an internet accessible device because I honestly don’t think that WD is ready for enterprise security as applied to consumers (I retired from a large financial firm as an internet security specialist). While I think their internal security is excellent I certainly don’t want to trust them with my data. I use MC as an inhome backup and sharing device for MAC, Linux, and Windows. I access MC with a file browser only and completely disabled access at my router. I don’t want to use Dell Datasafe, HP, Norton or any other cloud service to store my personal documents.

Thanks Bennor,

Now, so, to sum it up, could you tell me if there is a way to get rid of these pop up windows? If there is no way to get rid of these, wich alternatives do I have to see and upload files? For example I tested Using IE browser, but it was very slow when uploading compared to the time it took me to upload a file via WD My Cloud Desktop App. Another option may be using FTP, have you done that? Any other option to see and upload so that I dont have any trouble with these opo up messages?

Thanks a lot to both of you

My method is to use a FILE browser (not Internet Explorer) … I’ve tried the My Cloud app and I found no functionality offered that the Dashboard and file browser access were missing. Perhaps others have had different experience> The certificate warning is only disconcerting if and when you decide to access via the internet using the provided app.

… Or the WD Desktop apps; unless you need remote access, just map the drive into your computer’s file system, and control it via the web-based Dashboard. I have no WD apps installed on my machine.

I’m not sure why WD can’t get a certificate issued for their s/w.

Hi. Thanks a lot.

Could you tell me what do you mean with “File Browser”, like where do you click  to access that, or it is an app or aditional software?

I think it means that you open a folder and type the IP, something like that?

Thanks!

Thanks to you too for your reply. I asked the firt person that answered that what is “File Browser” or how do I access that, beacuse I dont understand that term. If you could answer too, it will be good. I understood the mapping thing because I have done that, and I remember that term.

Im a Civil Engineer I have not a lot of knoledge in networks and systems, just what I investigate sometimes.

Thanks!

A file browser is a program running on your computer that allows you to navigate around the folders and files on your computer system. It’s usually built in to the operating system, because it’s considered an almost essential tool for using a computer.

On Windows, it’s called ‘File Explorer’ or ‘Windows Explorer’.  On Macs, it’s called ‘Finder’.  If you can see an icon of a disk drive or file folder on your desktop, and you double-click it, it will open your file browser. I’m sure it will be instantly familiar to you; it’s just the name that’s caught you out…

P21 of the user manual onwards explains how to ‘map’ your drive into your computer’s file system.

If your trying to access the WD My Cloud remotely (ie off site) with your computer or laptop then probably not. At least not easily. Remote access, from one’s computer, generally relies on either the WD My Cloud Desktop application/software or going through the WD2Go.com website. Both will generate popups warning, of either certificate or Java security.

While you can configure the WD My Cloud for FTP access, FTP is generally not very secure (for a variety of reasons) when accessing the WD My Cloud from a remote or off site location.

On one’s local network where they can access their WD My Cloud locally there is typically no need to use the WD My Cloud Desktop application/software as one can use Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) or its equivalent on the Macintosh or Linux to access, browse and copy to and from the WD My Cloud. One can “map” the WD My Cloud to their computer so it appears as another storage device.

Any file uploading or downloading speed issues from remote or off site locations are typically and generally caused by the broadband upload speed at both ends of the connection. For quite a few internet users their download speed is much faster than their upload speed.

While I do find the warning message popups annoying I’ve pretty much come to live with it when using my computer to access the My Cloud remotely. More often then not I’m using either a smartphone or tablet to access the My Cloud remotely. Neither the WD My Cloud app or WD Photo app for Android generate the warning messages I see on the Windows computer.

If you have not yet read the WD My Cloud User Manual/Guide, I recommend it. It explains how to access the WD My Cloud both locally and remotely. It also details how to “map” the My Cloud to your computer for quicker/easier access when on your local network.

Probably a cost issue and the fact that locally one isn’t going through the WD2Go.com website. Generally web site certificates are tied to the URL/site name. And with the WD My Cloud one can change the device/network/URL name. For what ever reason they are using the certifiate from WD2Go.com even though one is accessing their WD My Cloud locally (not through the WD2Go.com website).

The bottom line is that of the three dialog boxes that generally appear when using the WD My Cloud Desktop app in its default configuration, one can get rid of two of the dialog boxes by selecting “Don’t show this message again” on each of the dialog boxs.

at PJP: If you’re still around, HOW do you use WD to back up you Mac?

One can use Apples Time Machine to backup to the My Cloud. See the My Cloud User Manual (WD Documentation) Chapter 4, Backing Up and Retrieving Files, Using Apple Time Machine.

Or see the following WD Support document:

http://support.wdc.com/KnowledgeBase/answer.aspx?ID=3561

Hi Bennor,
I’ve tried many times, following the directions from WD and Apple but inevitably, I get the following message from Time Machine after a few backups:
Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on “WDMyCloudMirror”. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.
I’m using a macbook pro and os 10.11.5
Are you really getting Time Machine to backup with no problems? If so, I really need to find out how you’re making it work.

I set my wife’s MAC to use Time Machine with WD My Cloud as the target. For the first backup I connected the MAC via ethernet. I have Time Machine configured to back up to WD only when the MAC’s plugged in. After the first backup the MAC connects via our WIFI router so it’s totally painless for my wife. Additionally I configured My Cloud to to make SafePoints at 3am.

I don’t use a Mac, but the error your seeing is a common one apparently that affects many different NAS and other backup devices. Here is one such thread over on Apple’s support site (if you haven’t see it already) that goes back to 2012 with your issue.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4207296

There is also this Apple doc: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH11310?locale=en_US

This link may also be relevant: http://pondini.org/TM/C13.html

And this link:
https://community.wd.com/t/more-time-machine-errors/92548

And finally this link from 2011 may have a potential workaround:
http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-based-backup-errors.html

The info at garth.org isn’t a workaround, it’s a way to try and fix an otherwise ruined backup. Not only does it take a really LONG time, it doesn’t always work.

Hi PJP,
Thank you for your reply. Maybe the initial ethernet backup made a difference, but seems unlikely. I couldn’t find the safepoint setting on my WD Mirror, so I"m guessing that it is only a feature on MyCloud, not MCMirror.
Anyway, thanks for your help.
