Cant see drive on my networks

Cant see drive on my networks, only on the one I installed it from. and even there it doeasnt show like my other non WD network drive. Gone through the browser set up , pretty confusing about shares , does say much about getting on the local network. My router does see it and has assigned it an IP address. what I am doing wrong anyone before i return it

Great! If you got the IP address, then what you need to do is:

Windows Vista & 7: Click on start> Then type in the search bar " [\IyourPadress](file://%5C%5CIyourPadress)"> Youll see the shares, right click the Public folder and select the option to map a network drive

On XP> Same process, but you need to type " [\ipaddress](file://%5C%5Cipaddress)" from the “Run”, as it kinda works as the search bar on Vista and 7 for searching the Network.

On a Mac 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6: Close all you can see, then click on Go on the top> Then click on connect to server> Then type “SMB://IPaddress” then select the public folder.

Hope it helps.

Thank you very much , it does work, though my Iomega net grive was much easier to install, and did not have to map the network drive on any of the computers or my WD TV life box , it just shows up. well live and learn. now i have to tackle the shares and to get my wd tv live box to acess this drive, if you have any ideas i would like to hear them , thanks in advance , for wd tech help is as useless as talking to my dog , but at least my dog wags its tail

You’re right.   You shouldn’t have to manually map anything; it should advertise itself on the network.

Make sure that your WORKGROUP is set up properly.

Also, make sure that the MASTER BROWSER on your network (wherever that might be) DOES see the World Live in its list by issuing the command

net view

in a CMD window.

Also, you can issue the command

nbtstat -a [ip address of the World Live]

to see what it thinkg IT is doing.

i tried the net view command and MyBookLive does not show up, onmy lap top, although i have mapped it and in explorer (in vista) it shows up , but when you click on it , it opens the web browser looking for mybooklive website which does not exist.I am using a lynks L3000 router, running vista on a hp laptop, running win 7 on a desktop, and win xp on another desktop, and its the same on all three, even running the discovery disk on each one . all on have the same workgroup name and i can see all on everycomputer without mapping , is this something inherent in wd network / media drives, if so , time to try anohter brand, thanks for the support . the reason i bought is to stream movies from it to the wd tv live box to watch downloads and the like. still awaiting on some form of answer from wd support , hopefully more then just resiting their manual . but thanks for the help though from this forum

No, it’s not something inherent…  I had no such issues with mine…

  – Two laptops (one Vista, One XP)

  – Three Desktops (One Vista, One Win7-64, One Fedora Linux)

  – Three WDTV Lives

…  all saw it immediately.

The Master Browser on your network MUST be able to find it, or NONE of them will find it.

This is how to find possible problems with the Master Browser on your network, which will affect when and what servers appear on your network.

On one of your PCs, open up a “Command” window.

(In Win Vista and Win7, click the Orb, and in the search box, type CMD. An icon will appear above the box that says cmd.exe. Click it, and a Command window will open.)

(In WinXP, Click START, then RUN…, and in the box, type CMD. A Command Window will open.)

In the command window, enter the command “net view,” like this:

C:\Users\Tony>net view
Server Name Remark

\BIGNAS1 Big Freakin’ NAS Server 1
\MARS
\NEPTUNE
\WDTVLIVE WDTV LIVE

\MYBOOKLIVE

The command completed successfully.

In my example, there are five active devices that Windows has discovered, including the MBL.

Now, for EACH of those, issue the command “nbtstat -a (name)” for example:

C:\Users\Tony>nbtstat -a bignas1

Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [10.0.0.157] Scope Id:

NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table

Name Type Status

BIGNAS1 <00> UNIQUE Registered
BIGNAS1 <03> UNIQUE Registered
BIGNAS1 <20> UNIQUE Registered
…__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered
WORKGROUP <1D> UNIQUE Registered
WORKGROUP <1E> GROUP Registered
WORKGROUP <00> GROUP Registered

So, we got lucky here, the FIRST system, BIGNAS1, indicates that it is the master browser, since it lists the name …__MSBROWSE__.

You need to find out WHICH system is your master browser. If none of these steps work as described, then the issue is likely on your PC itself, and that will require substantial additional troubleshooting.

Once you find that, try turning THAT machine OFF, so that a different machine will be elected the Master Browser.

Just to confirm what Tony says, I plugged my MBL into my Netgear WNR3500L Gbe router and it was almost instantly available on the network. I did install the software prior to any serious usage, seems pretty useful. Haven’t had any issues accessing the MBL from my PC (awesome transfer rates) or from several WD TV Live products.

Thanks for all the assistance, but had enough with this drive , took it back to best buy for a refund. while there picked up a seagate  goflex home 1 tb network drive, plugged it in , all my computers saw it and could access it. and without mapping the drive on each computer  loaded the software , maybe it will be of some use , . all is well on my net work again. wd net drives are no fun at all. maybe i had a bad one , or maybe it was just me, but anyhows hopefully this one will last awhile. and it was cheaper . so thanks again , i tried.
