I have a my passport ultra that I have been using less than a year to back up a desktop PC using windows vista. Backed-up pics mainly. That computer died, got a new desktop PC using windows 8.1. I can see there’s 25,000 files on the external drive but it will not allow me to select them to do a retrieval. Not sure at this point how to access the files?
If all else fails, just navigate to the files and drag/drop them back onto your PC manually if Smartware’s playing up.
I was able to figure out what I was doing wrong (I wasn’t selecting the correct backup volume in the first screen of the retrieval process). However my next issue is I transferred everything to the backup folder but it all appears to be coded (file names such as {00C4155B-1F9F-473F-8E2D-B5367006B089}). If you select the file it wants you to select a program to open it with. I have no clue what to do now?

WD SmartWare does not copy the associated programs needed to open the files themselves. For example, if you copied an .MKV movie with WD SmartWare, then you will not be able to open it/play it on a new computer unless it has an application for .MKV video files.
I understand it doesn’t copy the program but at least a recognizable file name would help me determine if it is a picture or a word document. Having 25,000 files in code doesn’t help me.
