Cant access folders - Permission Denied

I have just set up my new WD My Cloud and run straight into a problem.

My WDMC is connected to my home router which has a desktop with W7.

It was from this computer that I set up the WDMC.

I can access all the share folders in Explorer whether they are ‘Public’ or ‘Read Only’ or ‘Full Access’.

I cannot access ones that have ‘No Access’ selected.

Now, move to my Laptop, also W7, on the same wireless network.

I can see the WDMC and all the share folders in Explorer.

If the share folders I have set up are ‘Public’ I can access them no problems.

If ‘Public’ is turned off, and the User setting is to ‘Full Access’ I still can’t access them.

I get a ‘Permission Denied’ dialog box asking for the password.

Go back to public and it works!

Any idea why the permissions work on my desktop but not on my laptop?

Windows has a bizarre limitation.     Every share you access must have the same user ID and password.

If you first access a Public share (which has no user ID and password) then Windows tries to log on to ALL shares using no ID and password, and thus you cannot get into private shares.

That is wholly untrue…
