Cannot map WD My Cloud EX2 after laptop upgrade

Hello everyone. First time poster, hope I can get some help with an issue related to my WD My Cloud EX2 (not Ultra).

I have been using this for backup for a while now with few issues (other than access speed). My old laptop was a Lenovo Yoga running Windows 11 Enterprise. I have upgraded to an Asus ZenBook S (running Windows 11 Home) and I cannot figure out how to map a drive to my WD My Cloud EX2 anymore. It does show up when I click on Network as a network storage device, I can log into the website and I can also access the files via my Android phone. However, mapping it as a drive to my laptop so I can transfer files is impossible. I have made sure that my network is set to private, sharing is enabled, NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled, SMB 1 is enabled, firewall is off. I even added some weird registry value recommended in other posts. I tried mapping via IP address (rather than the name). Nothing works.

Since it’s visible I assume there is hope, however I am out of options. Any thoughts anyone? Is there another way to access the files from the laptop to the My Cloud drive other than a network drive?

Thank you!

What error message appears?

Sounds like the SMB signing issue with Win 11. The article below says 24H2 but also applies to 25H2.

Check the settings shown in the article on your Yoga if you still have it. If your Yoga was on an earlier release of Win11 Ent, it would not have needed these new settings.

Amazing article, thank you so much @Saudade !!

The error was something like “Windows cannot access ” (0x80070043 The network name cannot be found) although I was able to ping the IP

I got it to work and was able to roll back all the potentially dangerous settings (including SMB). Connecting with credentials (not guest) to a Public share (versus the root directory) is what changed everything - this was mentioned in the article!

Finally, I am not sure if I should keep the drive to a static IP (I am guessing yes) or go back to DHCP? Also please let me know if you have other settings/suggestions/articles/posts etc. in general around this product since it’s been discontinued

Many thanks again!

Glad you got it sorted out.

You can certainly keep the static IP if you prefer. The only issue you may have comes from changing routers or your service provider that could result in the static IP being invalid for the new network. It’s also possible for the IP to get assigned to another device (duplicate IP) depending on the actual IP address you’ve assigned. If you ever have to reset your EX2, it will default back to DHCP.

My EX4 is set to DHCP. If your router supports it, you can “reserve” the IP address for it so the router will always assign the same IP and never issue it to another device. This would be a setting in your router so consult the documentation if you choose to go this way.

Got it, switched to full DHCP (automatic DNS as well), let’s see. I can now access it via name (\\wdmycloudex2\Public). Thanks a million!
