Bricked Gen 2 MyCloud | firmware update in Safe Mode

Hi All,

Hope your well. I have been able to get about halfway through the guides identified online to unbrick my Gen 2 MyCloud. I’m at the point where I can access the Safe Mode page from the browser. I get the following text:

Safe Mode

Your device firmware appears to be corrupted and your device is currently running in Safe Mode.

Please download the latest firmware from the WD Support website at http:\www.support.wdc.com and upload the firmware file below:

|Firmware Version:|1.01.007|
| — | — |
|Upload File:||

However, I am trying to load the latest version of the OS3 Firmware to bring the drive back but it seems to get stuck at 100% and never finishes the firmware update.

Just quietly, I’m hoping Bennor will see this post and jump in to assist. I’ve read just about every post from them on how to try and bring this device back from the brink…

Which guide are you following?
If you were using the user Fox_exe guide (example: https://wd.hides.su/fox_exe/WDMyCloud-Gen2/_Unbricking_en.txt) for the second gen single bay My Cloud, did you follow it exactly; including using the specific mkpart partition values specified in the directions?
Did you use a Linux distro like the directions suggest to perform the unbrick process on the second gen single bay My Cloud?

To confirm. You have downloaded the latest v2.x firmware and are using it to upload from the safe mode screen, correct?

Second Generation Single Bay My Cloud Firmware Release 2.42.115 (1/18/2022)

Note: The directions linked in this post are ONLY for the second gen single bay My Cloud. They most likely will not work on any other My Cloud model or version. The My Cloud Home is an entirely different device and the linked direction and firmware file WILL NOT work on a My Cloud Home device. This subforum discusses the My Cloud device NOT the My Cloud Home line of devices.

Mr Bennor!

Thank you for replying. I can confirm I did used the Fox_exe guide. I followed the instructions precisely as instructed. I did not use the Linux Distro, as based on the instructions I read that as an alternative method to try AFTER the first method.

Given the first method ran to success, I assumed it was ok as I was now at the point of getting the Safe Mode screen and being asked to load the firmware. At this point, I tried to load the most recent version of OS3, as the OS5 instructions seemed to indicate that the drive had to be updated from the latest version of OS3 for OS5 to be successful.

One point to clarify, should i run the Firmware 2.x version prior to OS3? This is the file with the extension .deb?

I can confirm I definitely have a second gen single bay My Cloud, as my serial number ends in -10.

Thanks!

V2x firmware is OS3 firmware. The second gen single bay My Cloud started with the v2.x OS3 firmware before being updated to v5.x OS5 firmware.

Thanks for confirming Bennor. I can confirm I have tried to install 2.42.115 as per the following link:

https://downloads.wdc.com/nas/My_Cloud_GLCR_2.42.115.bin.

Do you recommend as next steps to attempt the alternative method and go the Linux Distro route?

Appreciate your help with this.

I have tried a couple versions of Firmware, but can’t find a link for the first version of the firmware that was released (2.10.302). Does anyone have a copy they can link to?

Ok, after a few more attempts I have gotten to:

Reboot

Device is rebooting

Do not unplug the device during the rebooting process.

However, the drive light is blinking red, and it never actually reboots…

Were you following the fox_exe directions for unbricking?
If so, did you follow the steps exactly (not changing any values) for the creation of the partitions (the “parted” portion of the directions)?

Other troubleshooting steps.
Try a different web browser, one with all extensions temporarily turned off.
Temporarily disable any security software on the computer in case that security (Anti-Virus, Malware, etc.) software is interfering with the firmware upload.
Make sure the My Cloud is directly connected to the router and the computer is likewise directly connected (using Ethernet) to that same router.
Try a 40 second pin reset on the My Cloud to see if that affects anything.
One may be able to find additional 2nd gen single bay My Cloud firmware at a repository someone else created: https://wd.hides.su/wd/Cloud_gen2/frimware/
Use the forum search feature to search the My Cloud subforums for similar discussions on unbricking where users had trouble uploading the firmware after unbrick. There may be additional suggestions in those other discussions.
Sometimes one has to perform the unbrick steps (exactly as listed) a couple of times before it “sticks” and one can upload the firmware.

WD for what ever reason limited users to only accessing the last two or three firmware versions from the WD website.
