Best way to upgrade capacity?

Hi All,

I underestimated how much capacity I would need and my 1TB drive is nearly full.  I know the SMP has 2 USB ports, so is my best bet, just to get a new 2TB drive and have them both plugged in, or could that cause issues?  Is there a better way?

I was thinking having the 1TB drive for TV programmes and the 2TB for movies?

Any thoughts?

Dom

cheapest/easiest way

just buy an external usb drive

any other option is going to involve network streaming

    • *That’s what he was asking!! The OP says he already has 1 external usb drive and he wants to know if adding a second external usb drive to the second usb port would cause problems. The answer is no it won’t cause problems, but you won’t be able to see content from both drives at the same time. You will need to press the red button on the remote and select which source i.e. which drive you want to view.

Duh, just put two, 2TB drives on the unit.  That is what I have done, and you don’t have problems with drives larger than 2TB.  I have one with music and one with movies.  If you run out of room, start deleting some stuff you will never watch again!

actually that is incorrect

the media library will display all content from both drives at the same time

if you’re not into media library, there are other hacks if you’re not afraid of the cmd line

What about the USB3 problems with the rear port?  Has that been resolved?  I didn’t think it had.  If it has not, then OP needs to make sure at least one of the drives is USB2, and that that drive is plugged into the rear USB port.  USB2 only external drives are getting harder to find (and may in fact be more expensive).

Apparently it’s going to be resolved in the next firmware.

Interesting observation; USB3’s are all that seem to be “on sale” these days anymore .  Glad I have a few new 2TB, 2.0’s stashed away for when my current ones for the WD fill up or die someday.  Well, there is always eBay for a while.
