Adding a device to my My Cloud Duo

I have a My Cloud Duo and running out of storage looking to add another device.

I am looking to add My Cloud Expert Series EX2 Ultra and have some questions like:

  • Can this be done?
  • Will it be seamless, or will I need multiple acounts?
  • Is there a better device I should purchase?

When I look it appears in the app you can just add a new device, and I am not sure if that means I will have to log on to separate accounts to see all my data or if I will be able to see everything by just opening the app.

Has anyone had any experience with this or a recommendation.

The other option is to replace my 2 4TB hard drives with larger ones.

If the My Cloud EX2 Ultra meets the requirements you are looking for then purchase it.

You will need to set it up, giving it a different name than your other device and a different password.
Steps to Setup and Use a My Cloud OS 5 in the Dashboard (My Cloud EX2 Ultra)

Example image of my two devices.

The My Cloud Home Duo is in the OS4 My Cloud Home (MCH) series. The My Cloud Expert series are OS5 My Cloud devices. The two are not compatible and you can’t add an Expert series to a MCH ‘Home’ account although there is an app in the ‘Do More’ setting to transfer data from OS5 to OS4, but not the other way.

Contrary to what you may assume, the OS5 is not ‘newer’ than OS4 and most of the OS5 series will see End of Life service by the end of 2026 but the OS4 series will see End of Life by the end of 2027.

You have to decide if doing more addition to the MCH Duo or MC Expert at this time is what you want to do.

Yes, you can add a My Cloud Expert Series EX2 Ultra alongside your My Cloud Duo, but they will function as separate devices. In the My Cloud app, you can add multiple devices under one account, but you’ll need to switch between them rather than seeing all data in one unified view. If you prefer seamless access to all files, consider setting up a network share between the two devices.

Upgrading your existing 4TB drives to larger ones is another option, but check WD’s compatibility list to ensure support. If you need more performance and flexibility, consider a Synology or QNAP NAS, which can offer better expansion and management options.
