Wohooo.... Some Experience with MyCloudEx2Ultra

I have had my system since 2017 and it has been working pretty well.

I just had some very troubling experience…

A few days ago I noticed that I cannot access my movies on my NAS from my TV. So today I tried to access it from the computer and it was not showing any files or folders there at all either. Next I logged into the admin site to see what’s going on. The admin page showed no existing shares, but the drives were showing as healthy. However it was showing 0 kb space available.

I rebooted.

The shares of one drive came back. But not the other. The free space is now indicated 7 something TB free, which means it somehow counts the files on the disappeared share.

Looking through forums, I found this old thread where someone was having a similar issue with vanished shares, so I tried what helped him, a system-only restore. That resetted my IP, my password, my users, but it did not restore the missing share for me.

I powered down. Removed the hard drives. checked them visually. Put them back in. Nothing changed.

I ran quick disk test, no problems found. I ran scan disk, no problems found.

I kind of lost hope and started creating a new share. It was creating a share. Then when I changed the tabs, the created share was not there anymore… Arggh

Then I noticed the disk with the vanished share now suddenly is showing as damaged on the storage page.

So now I started looking for support, to replace the HD, but the WD site is really not clear. After a good while and trying to re-register my product, I found my earlier product registration (seems like there are multiple separate logins now, so confusing) and my product is of course out of warranty. The support form does not even have Ex2 Ultra as a product. It gave me the impression I’m out of luck.

Then next time I logged in, again, free space 0 kb. Oh no, not again. so I rebooted. and it didn’t help. then I rebooted again. And it didn’t help this time either. But now I noticed my drives are not mounted anymore. Somehow my auto-mount setting had disappeared. The whole system felt unreliable now. I mounted them back and put pack the auto-mount on each of them again. Then I noticed the free space has jumped up to 8 TB… Did I somehow lose 1 TB data meanwhile?

Wait I figured when I noticed both disks are showing as good again (they had both been showing the blue light all along) OK let’s try making a new share again, I thought OK happy! it sticked this time. Renaming it worked too. So I thought of renaming it to the name of the vanished share… but nope that did not work. Hmm… so the share was there somehow…!

I thought of testing the same thing another way: Creating a new share with the same name, will that error out too? Holy moly, that gave no errors… did I just overwrite my share?

OK I thought: Better double check… navigating my explorer to the new share with same name as the vanished share and… ALL MY FILES ARE THERE !!!

OK happy again. But I don’t know what’s going on with my system…
What should I do? Pretend like this never happened?
