Windows XP 'My Computer' isn't showing the drive

I bought the MBL b/c i wanted to use it to transfer files from my main hard drive to free up space and to back up a couple external drives.  I am not sure when/why it happened but normally i access my external drives via ‘My Computer’.  Initially MBL was showing up, now it’s not.  I can’t see any of the folders/files i had moved to it and i am going out of my mind.  I don’t really care about using it remotely at this point.  I just really need it to be a storage device where i can dump and access files.

I am NOT very techie.  With my other external drives i plug them in, right click on them to ‘explore’ and then i am all set.  I am trying to keep things simple and this seemed simple enough but now it’s taking me forever to figure out what went wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

THANKS!

I don’t know that it would show up in ‘my computer’ unless you have mapped the drive.

I see it in ‘my network places’ as ‘Public on My Book Live Network Storage (Mybooklive)’

You will also see it at the bottom of windows explorer under ‘my network spaces’

You should be able to put [\MyBookLive](file://%5C%5CMyBookLive) in the address bar in Windows Explorer and it will show you the shares on the drive.

(Unless you’ve renamed the drive, then it’s \)

I’m afraid that did not work for me however as I said I can get to the drive via windows explorer / my network places.

By chance when you first purchased the unit, did you use the CD and it discovered your device?

Also, if you went through the whole CD install process, it would have installed something called WD QuickView.  This is a tool that you will see in the lower right corner in XP in the system tray (where you would see the time).  You can tell by the profile head icon.

If you right click on the icon, it will pull up a menu and you can map network drive letter or open the Public share.

I just checked my XP PC and [\MyBookLive](file://%5C%5CMyBookLive) still works on it.

(I have renamed mine, so it is not actualy MyBookLive, but it should be the same).

One thing to check is if the XP PC and MyBookLive are in the same Workgroup.

XP: Start / My Computer / right-click Properties / Computer Name

MyBookLive: Dashboard / Settings / Network / Workgroup
