How I Solved Windows 11 24H2 Update Issues Related to Disk Errors
Context
After updating to Windows 11 24H2, I encountered persistent disk-related errors in the system logs. After several attempts, I managed to resolve the issues. Here are the steps I took in case someone is facing a similar problem.
Identified Issues
- Disk Errors in Windows Logs:
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued. The IO operation at logical block address 0x11c47f40 for Disk 0 (PDO name: \Device\00000060) was retried.
Step-by-Step Solution
1. Reduce the TimeOutValue in Windows Registry
- In the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Disk - I changed the
TimeOutValuefrom 61 to 5.
2. Enable the AHCI Driver in the Registry
- In the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci - In the subkey
StartOverride, locate the value0. - Change the value from 3 (disabled) to 0 (enabled).
- Restart the system to ensure the AHCI driver is loaded by Windows.
Outcome
- Disk Errors Resolved: After performing the above steps, the disk-related errors disappeared completely.
- Stable System: No crashes or issues were detected after the adjustments.
EDIT1:
The error has occurred again, although less frequently. The solution for now has been this:
I had exact the same problem on quite a lot of my dell systems. Here is how i solved the issue:
First of all we need to change "AHCI Link Power Management" which is a hidden setting on power management. Open up registry editor and change the following settings.
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442\0b2d69d7-a2a1-449c-9680-f91c70521c60
Change attributes from 1 to 2
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442\dab60367-53fe-4fbc-825e-521d069d2456
And again change Attributes from 1 to 2.
Now go to Control Panel → System and Security → Power Options click on “Change Plan Settings” and then click on “Change advanced Power settings”.
Now under “Hard disk” you should have AHCI Link Power Management - HIPM/DIPM and AHCI Link Power Management - Adaptive options.
EDIT2 (2025-01-03)
Occasionally the error reoccurs. But it is rarer.
Something strange is that when I downloaded the ISO from the Windows website for installation, an Insider Preview version came up, and today Windows Update is unable to download Cumulative Update KB5048667. I will try to install it manually.
Another point is that my NVMe SSD is not Western Digital (WD), but ADATA. But ADATA’s software does not detect it.
