6TB MY BOOK 1230 Files dropping out or Drive disappearing (Win 10)

Have a HP 500/400 Tower running windows 10 on this have
1 x 1TB My Book WD 10
1 x 2TB Elements WD 1021
2 x 4TB My Book WD 1140
all these are running 24/7 doing file sharing and have been all their lives, so years even with a old tower with vista

got this new Tower in Nov 2015 and 6TB My Book1230 Drive about same time
all other drives haven’t had a problem with
the new 6TB 1230 almost Daily will either have drive showing but cannot access some or all files or the drive not showing in devices and drives but as unknown, have to pull power on it and leave for a minute then turn back on then run recheck on files that have stopped(sometimes been damaged) had a program today while working on computer 40 files stopped and more would of but check and drive was not showing so restarted it 2nd time today
have tried changing the sleep time from never to 90mins as that was what the 1140’s were set at but still no difference is the drive not compatible with Widows 10 or is there a Win 10 setting that maybe affecting it

Hi, have you tried the basics, like connecting the drive to a different USB port and using a different USB cable? Also, do you have the drive plugged into a wall power outlet?

Hi yeah tried different usb ports swapped power and usb leads with 1 of the 4tb just swapped with the other just in case
shares board with other drives for power, I’ve actually just taken out 2 other 1tb drives to put this in, this is 1st problems
had a usb2 7 port powered hub on old computer with all running and swapped straight over and was running fine taken hub out now as have enough ports plus this has usb3
I got drive in May 2016 has 2TB of data on it so far (moving everything from what was a very full 4TB doing file by file checking for errors before transferring)
windows & programs have latest updates even reinstalled WD latest driver
earlier today lost drive causing connection of 120 files to drop
I when notice it’s happened using utorrent as that’s running 24/7 .torrent files are on the 1 tb drive and data on the other drives been set up like this for 7+ years so not the problem but different error messages back today on different torrents
some .iso some lossless audio .flac and some DVD video .vob and not pirated stuff so nothing wrong within folders or files, some are years old they recordings from private collector trackers all the error messages today

so had a look and had no drive showing in folder explorer, though drive is powered and running doesn’t show WD device utilities, shows in devices and printers as unspecified device so unavailable, suppose it can sense something in port
and some of these torrents were active and running at time and my upload speed is 100kB/s so not a great load on system and some of that would be going from the other drives, so don’t think has gone to sleep or turned off with running connected program, and shouldn’t with settings unless windows is doing it

other times drive will be showing can open folders but try and execute a file and it’s invalid whether it’s audio, video, image or text
sometimes can do everything as per normal and can get utorrent to recheck file and it will reconnect to data straight away and do recheck and restart that torrent

thought may of been utorrent and drive conflict, but with drive disappearing and unable to open files with different media players, Image or text programs either when this happens, thinking maybe win10 and maybe try running win 8 as win 10 I put on at initial set up as I see someone else had similar problems with this drive with win 10

Tech support sent me a test program (Data Lifeguard Tools) which I ran basic test and my 1TB drive failed which is one that holds .torrent files so could be that dropping link but not doing it to other drives when just lose the file connection, running full check 10 hrs on 6TB then will do the 1TB and probably replace that since about 7+ yrs running 24/7 could do with it, so then would be just see if drive still dissappearing win10 was always showing no updates but went to microsoft website and there was so got it a new version

to keep people up to date as I try things etc and things weird which may help others

after running an extended test on my problem 1230 6TB with lifeguard was about to run a extended test on failed drive when lifeguard stopped responding 30 seconds later Windows notifacation that usb device was unrecognizable and it didn’t show available anywhere not even lifeguard it had just dropped out of there
so was power off for a mintue then power on again to get it back, failed drive passed extended test but SMART status is still a fail even on a separate machine

tech support solution back up hard drive so easist means buying new hard drive so can call it same so program links are valid lovely there goes $400+ or if I back up to old drives then would be deleting working files from utorrent reopening them and redirecting them to data folders 2500+ of them so months of work, then send away wait 3-4 weeks to get replacement which may still then by reading around other forums have same problem this has been going on since 2014 in different forums people asking for answers I went to go to HP Forum since all my gear’s theirs only to find threads already there, now just damaged one of other drives as I knocked it over with all moving around luckily still read data on it just some bad sectors, might have to give seagate another go was just case distorted that much from heat on last one I wasn’t impressed, and maybe for drives laying flat even though a 7yrs and still running 24/7 out of the 1TB, 2years no answers and still selling and if possible fault with internal hardware or sectors why weren’t they recalled

shut down my computer 1st time since setting up in Nov
so can sort out all the drives cables since been swapping around and was going to try problem drive in usb2 port

turn off computer
everything shuts down except the problem drive, power light at front still on so unplug usb cable still going so plug into laptop no drive comes up, pull power on ext drive and repower up drive and away again in laptop eject it and it shuts down so now set it all back up into desktop again and set going but for how many hours days who knows

after finding out some more info recently when I get my replacement useless they do something to it will be same problem and problem alot are having but it’s not acknowledged by WD
my own fault for not checking fully when buying My Books wouldn’t of bought, I thought Password and encryption were both options to be turned on but sounds like encryption is automatically done cannot be turned off, so maybe our new drives encryption and from windows 7 on have a conflict but no-ones admitting to it even ph call from WD I had, never heard of anyone having problem told the person the communities full of posts of drives not being recognized, and posts in forums at computer help forums all around the world even HP site I went to originally thought might of been my new tower settings and Win10 there was posts there
unless can find way of turning off encryption 5 x different age & size My Books will be up for sale

just had a RMA replacement drive arrive so will setup and hopefully they done something to rectify problem
when I haven’t been on here for a while and 1st thing I see is someone with same issues as alot of us
and yet never heard of it when had a call from esculated tech support maybe tech support should made to read community pages

That would defeat the purpose and intention of the WD Community and the very reason why it was created in the first place.

yeah I understand that, sorry thought they’d have some sort of idea, been putting up and working on it going to forums for 3 months, before doing RMA could of done a RA. it happened with 1st one within 7 days of being new, don’t think anyone in community has found a real solution for their own maybe and to hear tech support say never heard of it
just checking here would give them an idea of problems and how many of the same issue that’s happening with certain equipment can then try and replicate it, so they can go to manufacturers as WD community forum isn’t only forum people are asking for solution to problem HP was some there as I checked when 1st happened to me since was 6 month old Computer upgraded to win 10
we’re all here to help if a solution arises I’ll be first to say, and if tech support browsed forums they may find solutions to queries
maybe needs a thread with different solutions people find around net and ones added from here so all in one place

this new drive with maybe 500GB of data transfered over to it so far, lasted one day and has disappeared from system
checked updated to latest driver and updated drive firmware before using

doesn’t show in WD utilities, devices & printers, file explorer
shows as unspecified device in device manager
shows unknown usb device, set address failed, driver error in connected devices

I pulled power for a minute plugged it back in and it’s going again

so if it is something like the encryption mode that conflicts with windows 10 most common operating system I’ve seen it with, if it is encryption why is it suddenly doing it, as last one drive was sometimes still visible but files weren’t
Who gets on to someone about it or will they just keep on sending out replacements till warranty runs out with me waiting a few weeks each time, when maybe can be a simple fix with a software driver update
people have been having this problem since about 2013 think I’ve seen on here , this new drive I received was built in jun 2016 and still problems the software included is dated 2013. same drivers as my 3yr old 4TB my book 1140’s ?

Tomorrow will strip tower of ext drives uninstall drivers then reinstall everything starting with new drive
change drives to different ports again and run extension leads from somewhere else where there is no power usage in house for all equipment except this drive plug here by itself since double wall socket then can not be any power fluctuations around this part of house
next then maybe drag out the vista machine and try it

didn’t get a chance to shutdown and do what going to do today but it stopped twice
notice in event log when I first connected it hasn’t migrated
quick glance in another forum last night someone suggested a while ago to someone formatting drives before mounting
have all Microsoft & HP procedures was going to go through again uninstall all ports & drivers etc

2 faulty drives or not compatible with Win 10, almost tempted to format take out of case and switch case of smaller drive thats been running ok for 10 months on this machine but smaller drives are in red, full of data

though someone maybe able to say what the problem is by this which maybe due to WD non my book drives hooked up

has anyone come up with a fix all solution to this with this not recognised devices seems on forums like Microsoft, HP or other tech help forums if one’s found it’s a one off fix
I’m on 2nd RMA that’s not fixing problem hoping for solution, I’ve just been a few weeks without hard drive and then time setting up again have 5 TB to go on it and couldn’t even keep it running for a day and under 1TB on it and have it crash

This has been happening pre & post win10 anniversary update (3rd drive)
I have deleted these (some a few times) all ports all USB Hub controllers & all ext drives
have updated all ports, drivers, all firmware
tried old versions of some programs
been through made sure windows can not turn off drives or suspend ports via selective suspend
power mode in WD utilities switched off to never sleep
tried different power sources, power bricks, leads, ports USB3 & 2
because it is setup for a purpose hooking to another computer and doing same work is not possible but last drive once everything reverted back to previous drives I tried on Win10 Laptop once it crashed 2 times it was straight onto a RMA, was good when support person rung and took over remotely first thing he probably seen as he tried to do what he was about to do was a pop up saying The last usb device connected to this computer was no longer recognised and he would of heard me say “there we go we’ve lost it” and I got “hold on a minute” so then i got it back up and running
so then all they can do is just check a few things then wait for me to say yes it’s done it again

since setting this one up on 9th windows system log 3700 lines, a disc error log section I sent to support was 2100 lines for 1 crash
since 11aug reinstall and upgrade Windows 10 to anniversary hoping to fix problem of hard drive crashing almost daily for 2-3 months and before coming to WD seriously looking for a solution or warranty rather than browsing like other forums, The windows system logs 41,000 maybe about 3/4 disc errors for 1 model drive 3 different units with RMA’s

is that when it’s hit everything preloaded on drive? guessing maybe as 1st 49,000 on laptop most were 154 errors on C: drive when upgraded to anniversary but no problems with that

crashes seem to have this process using system log error id
error 7 - comes in a cluster
warning 153 - once @ whatever block address, if more than 1 they’re at a different block address
warning 51 - another cluster and then it’s all over

Lucky was at computer only had 4 folders with large files to regain link and check data so few minutes
(2100 lines was 7 folders but most small files again few minutes to recheck) time before that was about 4hrs+ waiting for it to recheck 900GB I had on drive that’s 3 been installed 9 days with a crash everyday

well this must be embarrassing for tech support and WD haven’t heard back since I sent them my final email telling Tech support what I found my problem was, OEM software that comes packaged with the computer, (problem when you hide things from each other think you’re out doing them, ) maybe get rid of 3 HP computers 5 WD hard drives after this 2 RMA on drive taking 3-4 weeks each time as had to go to Thailand and had to be received before they’d send one back to NZ wasn’t just a matter of putting data on was links in a program to each folder to be swapped from old to new drive so On & Off/ On & Off On & Off finally just ON
after going through windows daily crash logs some 6000 lines long 1TB on a 6TB Drive imagine when it’s full doing it guessing when it did it’s daily checks the My Book failed the computer’s SMART test gets disconnected then windows cannot find it bring’s up the not recognised error
why when I 1st connected it I had a driver error it fail test not recognised straight away by windows (no it’s not a My Passport bet it’s doing same thing)

I have removed the OEM software from and drive has been running fine for over a month 24/7

so if you have a drive unrecognised and a HP Computer probably come with this software from Win 7 on
if you have another Brand but have a HP peripheral i.e wifi printer you may have program so it checks firmware and updates, or downloaded it as recommended and maybe it’s checking your drives and failing them
or maybe other brands use same type of software renamed for their machines doing the same thing

So why does drive pass WD SMART Tests But not the computer’s It’s made for it

Sounds like you may be in the early stages of drive failure.

Run chkdsk x: /f where x is the drive letter of your external drive. Because your problem seems to be intermittent you might have to run chkdsk on different occasions to catch it.

If chkdsk flags errors, I would get your data off that drive as quickly as possible.

When my external WD MyBook started failing, the WD diags would show the disk good on some occasions and failed on others. I also developed the click of death. Turned out to be a bad printed circuit board on the HD and I was able to recover most of my files. That was more a fluke than skill.

Ultimately, run chkdsk x: /r but that could take a full day, or days. There are apps like Victoria and MHDD which will give you a visual of bad sectors but be extremely careful not to play with features on them you don’t understand. Activating the wrong feature could be distarous.

no this is no drive failure this 3rd drive with same problems for almost and a year tech suport ringing me and doing all those normal basic tests and just going lets do an RMA and not finding a problem but it was me going through daily window logs for months trying to work it out myself and seeing a HP program doing a smart test and failing drive in administraive event logs but wasn’t showing in window logs which tech support didn’t look at neither logs just run normal checks on my drive remotely
ID on errors were 3 & 5 and just before each crash daily when it did it’s checks of my other equipment

here’s the one when I uninstalled program for good as I’d uninstalled to see if drive would run ok then reinstalled and it crashed within 12 hrs then daily after running 2 weeks with no problems
and it’s been running since this log without shutting down

Here’s another approach. It got me out of a bind when I had issues with an XP/Win7 dual boot malfuntioning.

I presume you have already run chkdsk with both the /f and /r parameters separately.

It’s only for Windows 7 and below so you’ll have to check to see if there is a similar procedure for Win 8/10.

You can still do sfc /scannow from a command prompt on W10.

Another approach for W10 using DISM

This is a paging file error by the looks of it. Have you done an exhaustive test of your memory modules? Since it does the same on several drives you should be looking at memory or a motherboard problem.

Sometimes the only way to test a memory module is to replace it with a known good one. If you have two or more modules you can try swapping them. Or pull one and run on only one module. If the errors persist, remove that one and insert the other one.

Overheating can cause issues like that, are you over-clocking? A faulty power supply can do weird things.

I have fixed my problem after tech support contacted a few times me emailing them, them calling me a few times, looking at my coputer remotely saying stop using a program I’ve been using for 6 + yrs with 5 other My Books and they couldn’t help just RMA

3rd drives all same problem crashed within 24hrs of brand new then daily this includes the 2 RMAs

I’ve got 7 yr 1 TB drives beside it doing same work it was running earlier 2.2MB/s up to 15 connections no problem
runs 24/7 now, I’ve got no problems with it now I’m actually game enough to save data to it and have 4TB and still transferring over today

I’m just annoyed that you buy a new drive with a brand new computer and it’s a problem from day one as it’s not compatible and you go around the net to find an answer including WD furum and find and whole lot of unanswered results to people having unrecognised My Book 1230 with Win 10 when it’s not a windows problem it’s a WD have a look in forum here and how many people have My Books and My Passports not recognised in Win 10 then around net on computer fix it sites, And then I find it’s OEM software that comes installed
