WD My Book Essential - Short Drive Self Test failed.. Any way to recover?

My WD My Book Essential(2TB USB3.0) recently failed on routine WD Smart Ware Short Drive Self Test.

More than half of the Disk is filled with valuble content I dont have any extra disk to back up all that data.

So is there any way to repair it? SMART check is ok,already performed thorough Disk Check(chkdsk /r).
What elements /parametres are being checked under ‘Drive Self Test’?

Possible cause of test failure?

Sorry to hear that you cannot access your data. With the help of a data recovery program you should be able to recover most of your files, using Google you can find several options.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the fact that all the disk contents are still accessible. Only the ‘Quick Drive Test’ fails. SMART check is ok. Drive works as normal, but I am not sure about its health, as the Quick test failed.

Hi, try running a test with DLG for a second opinion. If the test fails again, then I will recommend you to replace the hard drive. Check the links below for the steps to run a test with DLG and for the replacement options that we have.

Hi again, the problem seems to be with bad sectors, you can try to fix it by going into the computer/My Computer window, right click on the My Book icon/Properties/Tools/Error-checking/Check now, click on the check box for “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”. Once you finish this try running the DLG test again, and if it fails you need to replace the My Book.

OK, I performed ‘chkdsk /r’ via command probmpt (before starting this topic). So is it same to a scan with “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors” enabled?

Thorough scanning takes almost a day to finish(2TB), so if the specified scan is same as ‘chkdsk /r’ then I dont need to waste lot of time on diagnosing.

Is there any difference in operation ‘chkdsk /r’ and ‘chkdsk /f /r’.

As I said I performed ‘chkdsk /r’ before starting this topic(it didnt fixed), It took almost a day to finish.

So if ‘chkdsk /f /r’ is much differnet from ‘chkdsk /r’ or any hope, then I am ready, otherwise its meaningless to spoil one day.
