Diagnostic Test Full or Short: Self Test failed

I think i have some bad sectors in the HDD of MyBook live. But when i do Diagnostic Test (short or full) in the utilities menu, it ends up with: ‘self test failed’. How to solve this?

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.

Regards,

What you could do is enable SSH, login as root and issue the command smartctl -A /dev/sda.

The details I get for mine is . . .

NAS:~# smartctl -A /dev/sda

The counters on here will reveal if you’ve got physical errors with your MBL.

Now, if you don’t wish to mess around with the shell then login to the MyBook Live dashboard using the web browser, select Support.  From there you have two options.  First is to contact Western Digital support and send you MyBook Live’s status to Western Digital.

The second option is to create and save a system report.  This option will collect a variaty of log files and put them in a ZIP file which is then downloaded into your computer. Opne this ZIP file using something like WinZip, 7Zip, WinRar and even XP, Vista or Window 7’s ability to access the contents of a ZIP file.  Once open look for a file named smart_info.

This file will show the same information (actually a bit more) than shown above.  The S.M.A.R.T. status of my drive shows a healthy drive. Note the lines I have that have a value of 0. On yours are any of these non-zero?

It’s better to request support from the MyBook Live’s dashboard as then Western Digital support automagically get a copy of the log files and configuration.

Regards,

Hi there!

I’ve got the same problem. Here is my smartctl log. Can you give me some advice, how to repair the bad sectors?

Yours,

Janos

Oh wow… I immediately see a potential problem.  The hard disc on your MyBook live is in danger of failure.  The temperature of the disc is 70 degrees celsius and I’m not surprised that it’s caused a Current_Pending_Sector count and the other read errors.

The IMMEDIATE remedy is to put the network drive somewhere in the building where it’s cooler.  You’ll see from the S.M.A.R.T. status of my drive that the temperature is 36 degrees celsius and has not risen above 42 degrees celsius.

The other advise is to back-up whatever you can’t afford to lose.

Chances are if you put the MBL is an cooler environment then it’ll last for quite a while.  At the moment the drive is managing to deal with the problem itself.

Also, seeing that the drive has not been on for a a long time so IF the drive is in a cool environment and it’s a mechanical fault within the drive that’s causing it to overheat then send it back to be swapped under warranty terms.

I’d be curious to know if, while his drive is reaading that high of a temp, if the “temperature” indicator in his taskbar still shows “ok”.  I have my MBL behind a plasma tv that gets hot, although most of the heat goes out the top of the tv and the drive is at the bottom.  Mine is idling most of the time, but I still check the temp indicator in the task bar and so far it’s always ok/green.  I wonder what temp would change that notification…
