I am thinking of upgrading from a 5.1 to a 7.1 channel receiver. I’m specifically interested to see if the SMP will pass thru (HDMI) formats such as DTS-HD.
No, DTS-HD is not passed. It only sends the DTS “Core.”
WD Insists that DTS refuses a license. Other players do it without a license. Legality is another matter. 
What about Dolby Tru-HD?
Yes, it does pass True-HD, but I don’t know about True-HD 7.1 channel. I don’t have any any media that has that.
