I do not want my new My Passport drive to have data encryption enabled and I’m not bothered about setting up password protection, so I need to know if I don’t install the WD software that is downloaded onto the drive, will it just be a simple storage device with no data encryption and accessible if something goes pear shaped with the internals?
Nope – it’s encrypted anyway. The lack of a password just keeps it perpetually unlocked.
Well that’s a big bowl of BS isn’t it. I guess it’s the old buyer beware credo here. If I had known this I definitely would not have bought a WD drive (3rd time) again! This should be made blatantly clear on labels attached to the product that data encryption is a mandatory action for all WD drives so then you can drop it like a hot potato and find another drive that will not use encryption.
