Encryption software for WD Passport external drive

Hello,

I just got a WD Passport 4TB external drive. Do you know of an encryption software i can use? I tried BitLock but it doesn’t seem to work.

Thank you!

Scott

Hi, The encryption comes with the Passport. Use WD Security, but be careful because it requires a password and if you forget the password you have to erase the drive and start over! Best bet is to have the same files available elsewhere.

Cliff

Thanks for sharing the information.

You could try WD’s official WD Security software (if your Passport model supports it) or use VeraCrypt.
P.S. If BitLocker isn’t working, it is likely because the Windows Home edition does not support creating BitLocker-encrypted drives.

If BitLocker is not working on Windows 11, first check whether you have Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education since full BitLocker support is not included with Home. For a WD Passport, WD Security is usually the simplest option because it supports password based hardware encryption on compatible Passport models. VeraCrypt is another solid choice if you want a free option that is not tied to Windows. Just back up anything important before setting up encryption because changing encryption or formatting the drive can make existing data inaccessible if something goes wrong.
