My WD TV Live seems to be freezing upon boot. I am using one of the Public Beta firmwares (it may be 1.03.39 but it’s hard for me to verify since my unit is essentially bricked at the moment). When I power my WD TV Live on, it shows the WD TV Live logo for about 15-20 seconds before going to a completely black screen. The unit seems unresponsive to all remote control commands. The only way to power the unit off is to unplug the power cable (plugging the power cable in again automatically turns the unit on).
I tried holding the reset button for 10 seconds while the unit is on. I’ve done this both while the unit is displaying the WD TV Live logo and during the black screen period as well. As far as I can tell, this has had no effect.
This is a recertified unit that I purchased off a reputable online retailer about two months ago. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
After the screen goes black, wait about a minute. Then press the remote power button. Does it go off then?
If it does, and you’re using HDMI, the Video Mode is probably messed up. You can plug in the COMPOSITE or COMPONENT cable and change the video mode that way, perhaps.
If it does NOT, then yeah, it very well may be dead…
I also have experienced a lot of freeze ups when the WD Live Plus boots up. I have to unplug the AC power to regain control. Sometimes it starts up on the first try, but frequently it takes several attempts to get it to boot up correctly. Ocassionally, it takes so many resets to get the box to boot up that it appears to be broken. Lately, this has become such a PITA that once it finally boots up correctly, I just leave the WD box on all the time.
I agree with Tony, connect to your TV with the composite input. I don’t know if you are aware of this, but when you hold the reset button in for 10s the WD box switches from NTSC to PAL mode. When you hold the reset button for less than 10s it just resets without changing the video mode. Since you have held reset for over 10s, there is no way to tell what video mode you are in, so every time you try resetting the box, make sure that you hold reset for at least 10s so that you can switch the video mode. If you can get it working with the composite input, then you can go into the setup menu and set the component or hdmi outputs to the correct resolution/frequency for your TV.
If you ever get it to boot up correctly, do yourself a favor and just leave it on all the time!
The box wasn’t responsive after several minutes of waiting following the black screen but I tried plugging in composite cables instead of the HDMI cable and booted it up and it worked. I then switched back to HDMI and it’s working again. Perhaps not a great sign that it’s having problems so soon after I purchased it (two months) but my fingers are crossed that this issue is resolved. Thanks everyone!
ALL of ya’ll should be posting this in the BETA thread instead of separate threads; there’s a very good chance no one from WD Development is even reading this thread. Plus, it’s confusing to Non-beta testers who don’t know that you’re having a problem unrelated to production software…
