WD SmartWare for Windows Version 2.4.4 not installing

I have downloaded this WD Smartware software update (for My Book) and run it.

It claims to have installed correctly but when I restart the program it still shows the old version 2.4.2 and the reminder for the update keeps appearing.

I have tried installing after exiting WD Smartware with the same result. I have rebooted my computer after each try (although I was not prompted to do so by the update process).

What is the solution to this please?

What happens if you completely uninstall WD SmartWare and then proceed to install the latest version directly from WD’s website?

I have uninstalled WD Smatrware as suggested, but running the latest update did not reinstall the program.

I then tried reinstalling WDS from the files included on My Book, which gave me version 1.4.11.

Running the latest update did not update this version, neither did running the previous update to version 2.4.2, which had previously worked. In both cases the installer claimed to be running, though the blus line showing progress did not appear, then the Finished screen appearsed without prompting for a restart. My version of WD Smartware is now only 1.4.11.

My operating system is Windows 7 64 bit.

I could not find the full 2.4.4 version of the program on the website. The products advertised did not give the version. If this is what I need, please send me a link to the correct file and confirm that it will install without payment.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my query and for this link.

Unfortunately the page does not lead to the full current version of WD Smartware.

The Available Download of WD Smartware for Windows is the version 2.4.4 which did not update properly when I ran it on my previous version 2.4.2, and which will now not update my reinstalled original version 1.4.11.

The link under Most Popular Downloads to WD Smartware for Windows, which looks very hopeful, in fact only leads back to another copy of the 2.4.4 update.

It also refers to a Firmware update which I have already successfully installed (this states that it was updated on 9/24/14, but the firmware updater in the downloaded zip file is actually dated 8/15/14).

Is someone able to let me know how to find the full current version 2.4.4 of WD Smartware please?

The landing page has the correct version of the software.  I checked it to make sure.

Since you’re moving up from 1.X.X, you may need to get Support to help you with this.

Many thanks for the referral to further support.

I was able to speak to an advisor who directed me to a Microsoft Fixit program  http://support2.microsoft.com/mats/program_install_and_uninstall/ which cleaned up the uninstall of the old WD version.

She also sent me a link to the update for MyBook Essentials rather than the Passport hard drive.

I am now pleased to say I have WD Smartware version 2.4.4 up and running.

I am very grateful for the WD technical support, and particularly that I was able to contact an adviser on a freephone line.

Incidentally I tried to respond to the helpful private message, but could not find out how to get into the Message Body to type a reply!
