WD Security compatible with Elements?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to replace my WD My Book with a new external hard drive. I’m considering the Elements Desktop, which looks like the superior product, but I don’t know if the WD Security software is compatible with it. Can anyone give me a conclusive answer?

Thanks!

Jack

WD Security does not support WD Elements Desktop Drives.

WD Elements are not really “superior” product … they are more of a “budget” product which is why most of the time they are cheaper. They are a hard drive which offers basic storage, no password software or hardware encryption and only basic software support.

If you don’t need any of those features, they are a good budget solution for basic storage and for backup purposes.

I own 6x WD Elements Desktops and 5x WD Elements Portables and they all work great for my basic needs

Thanks for clearing that up!

The WD Elements has an on/off switch and some form of shock resistance. In that sense it seems superior to the My Book, which lacks both. But I’m sure other assessments can be made based on different criteria. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks again for the quick reply.

oh, i forgot there was one on the back … i have never used it. (don’t really see the point as i power off my drives at my power strip when finished at night.)

all drives have a certain shock tolerance (or resistance)

Dropping a WD Elements drive from a height onto a concrete floor will not fair any better if you did the same thing with a WD My Book

I’ve disassembled both WD Elements and WD My Book enclosures … and the durable enclosure designed for style and protection (to quote from the marketing speel) are virtually identical in their design and construction. There is no “extra” shock resistance protection that i can see,
