WD Red Pro WD4001FFSX constantly ejected from QNAP

Dear Community Forum,

We have a TS-853A fitted with 8 x WD Red Pro WD4001FFSX that every now and then eject a hard drive and mark it as unplugged with the status “A drive has been detected by is inaccessible”

Okay, the drive may be faulty, we thought. We removed it, check it and is all okay, so why the QNAP keep ejecting them? It keeps on happening randomly on some bay, 2, 4 and 7, and is so frustrating because every time we have to remove the hard drive, wait x amount for hours for the RAID to be rebuild and check the ejected hard drive, which always appears as good, so we don’t understand why this is happening

Upgraded the QNAP to the latest firmware 4.2.2 but still the same problem happens. These hard drives model WD4001FFSX have firmware version 81.00A81

We got so fed up with these drives being ejected all the time that at the end have beginning to buy hard drives model WD4002FFWX which have firmware version 83.H0A83. So far we have change 2 x hard drives that these new ones with firmware 83 are not ejected

What do you think could be the problem? If there a way to upgrade the remaining 6 x WD Red Pro WD4001FFSX to firmware version 83? Hopefully that will prevent them from being ejected all the time

Any one of you have come this issue before?
Any helping hand would be very much appreciated!

Thank you so much

Hello,

I recommend you contact WD Support directly for assistance with this issue.

Thanks so much Hamlet

We did send the unit back to QNAP, who had it for 3 weeks and they say that they repair it, but when we got it back, couple of days after the hard drives were still being ejected by the unit

That it when we started buying the model with firmware 83, we can’t really waste more time with this and we struggle without this unit on our infrastructure. I know we should have send it back again but hey, we badly need it operational

I wanted to find out through the WD Communities if the drives model WD4001FFSX with 64MB cache and firmware 81 is giving problems to anyone?

Thanks again
