WD Passport Not ejecting - Spinning after shutdown

This thing seems to have a life of it’s own. I try to safely eject and it give me an error message. Then I power down the computer and the ■■■■ thing it still spinning! I don’t want to have it burn out or disconnect in the middle and corrupt some file or another. This is a continuous problem. It does not appear that any files are open. I wonder if it could somehow be related to dropbox?

Sometimes drives do not safely eject. So, turn computer completely off, drive will spin down, remove it when drive stops and any light are off.and reboot computer. Once rebooted, fully you can reconnect drive. After it has spun up and running a minute or so try to safely eject if you have not used drive. It should eject.

NO. Turned is off hours ago. Drive still spinning.

Maybe the USB port you are plugged into is always “hot” and will charge things when PC is off. UNPLUG PC from power and drive will likely stop, and next time use a port that is not always hot (see your PC manual or website to find out which ports charge things when PC is off.)

I have had the computer unplugged all night long and the drive is still spinning. The only option is to unplug it from the port while in progress or to let the computer battery die.

I did end up pulling the drive. This morning it was blinking but not spinning. I’m hoping for the best.

I was going to suggest that, because you were obviously plugged in to a hot USB socket. Nothing likely happened to drive because it had been doing nothing for many hours. Nevertheless, do a disk scan if you get an error message after you plug it back in to PC, in fact, even if you don’t get a message. Disk scan is a Windows utility that scans for disk errors and fixes them…
