Wd passport, laptop recognises but finds no files

my passport is a few yrs old and laptop even older, so no doubt its one of these issues. 

When I plug in it shows under my computer, but when i go into it theres is no files showing.  Although under properties it shows that there is 7gb free of 149gb.

This is really important that this gets fixed, its a backup (now oroginal is lost due to a virus) of my whole life in digital.

Try going into Folder Options and check Show Hidden Files. See if that helps. Maybe a Linux Live CD would work. It doesn’t actually install you just boot from that. See if either of those work.
