Just ran into this issue:
My new My Book formatted in exFAT is not compatible with the EX2 so I can’t plug it into the USB port on the back and have it recognized by the EX2.
MY question is if I buy a EX2 Ultra no drives, can I remove my drives from my EX2 and put them in the EX2 Ultra without loosing any data?

In order for you to keep the data, you will need another My Cloud EX2, not EX2 Ultra as it is a different model.
Also, try formatting the My Book to NTFS or HFS since the My Cloud EX2 should recognize it.
Thanks for your reply. I reformatted the My Book with NTFS and the EX2 sees the expanded storage. sometimes. I can log into the device web interface and sometimes it sees the additional space, other times it doesn’t.
