Hi guys!
As a new WD My Cloud user, i was expecting from my 400 euro worth NAS to stream subtitles together with my .mkv files. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. I’m using 2015 UHD Samsung Smart TV and video plays just fine, but whatever i do, i just can get the subtitles. As expected, USB source works - subtitles are showing nicely.
I’ve just upgraded to the newly released firmware v2.10.302. Twonky Server is v7.2.9-6.
Subtitle network stream is a must for me, so please let me know is there anything i can do to enable this feature. Hopefully i’m not going to be forced to switch to Synology or some other well known brand.
Thanks.
Since you’re using mkv files, just mux the subtitles into the file.
Does anyone know why is this option not available? I thought this is actually very common thing…
btw. is it possible to resolve this problem through a direct network share? How can i set it up?
Tnx.
I would wonder if the problem is at the TV end with its media player rather than with the MCM.
Do you have a Windows PC available that you could share a folder on? If so try putting a movie and a subtitles file there, and try viewing it (and the subtitles) from it on the TV. Or if you have a Linux machine, do something similar with an NFS share (ideally use the same file sharing format that you are using with the MCM).
Or are you using DLNA to do the sharing? I don’t think DLNA supports that kind of remote-file subtitles. I’ve seen some similar discussions on media player forums (Kodi) on this topic, although I’m not sure of the details there as I don’t use DLNA so didn’t take much interest.
Actually, i was using only DLNA.
Do you know how can i enable ordinary network share on MCM so i can read files directly on TV?
Thanks.
It depends a little on what format of shares the TV can deal with.
Your files I presume are already in shares accessible from your PC, so they are already in SMB (Samba) shares. But if you go to the shares entry in the ribbon-menu on the dashboard and select the relevant share, in the details of the share that appear to the right of it you can also enable NFS and Webdav shares (I think you also need to enable Webdav under the network entry of the settings item as well if you want to use that).
If you can clarify what type(s) of shares your TV can access and accept then we can be a bit more specific.
Ok, i will try to play with the mentioned options as well.
One more thing - how can i browse/access all files, including system and app files on MCM?
Tnx.
I am also interested in this topic, since for some movies I can play with subtitles, others don’t.
If I connect some drive to the TV by usb, I can always see the subtiltes.
I often use subtitles in SRT format with the same name as the movie.
I have read somewhere that it often fails for mp4 format, and someone mentioned to rename the movie files to other extension, for example mkv or avi. I have not tried that yet.
I have also tried to use plex, but it seems worse than twonky.
If you enable smb and webdav, is there any security concerns related with that? I mean, is it more prone to be accessed from outside your LAN?
Well, i have also tried to use Plex, every single possible option (direct play, direct stream, transcoding, etc.) and still no luck. And My Cloud Mirror is listed under supported devices for Plex!
Also, i’ve enabled NFS and Webdav for public shares, no difference at all, at least for my 2015 model Samsung UHD TV.
@vonSchultz - if you mean what I think you mean, you need to enable SSH access and then use a suitable client program on your local machine (e.g. Putty for Windows - I think Linux has SSH client built-in, not sure about Mac). Note that if you don’t know what you’re doing it can be dangerous, as if you mess about with the wrong files you could lobotomise your MCM (it’s full access to the underlying OS). Also WD do not support this, and you will get a warning notification if you enable such access in the dashboard.
@Tavarini - yes, it is very much dependent on the formats (both the movie and the subtitle files).
For your other question - unless you do something to enable it, neither SMB nor Webdav will be available outside your network. SMB is actually always enabled (it’s the default sharing that’s always used). Unless it’s set-up as public, you need to log into the MCM using an appropriate username and password to access either.
It is possible to access via webdav from outside your network by port forwarding on your router, but by default they won’t be and so everything is secure.
Back to topic - I’ve also tried Plex on my TV, MAC & iPhone - still no subtitles.
Plex is supported by the MCM so there is only one conclusion - the problem is in the WD NAS, not the TV or something else.
So still no solution for this tiny little option which is available on most devices from Synology, QNAP, etc.
I can’t comment about plex as I don’t run it, but if I play an MP4 file with a separate SRT subtitle file on my PC using either VLC or Kodi I can get subtitles fine. On VLC I have to open the SRT file directly (it’s how VLC does it) but Kodi picks it up just fine. Both movie and subtitle file are exactly the same name (with distinct extensions of course) and are in the same folder on the MCM.
The sharing is done via NFS for Kodi, and SMB for VLC.
As a trial, can you either install Kodi on your Mac and try that, or convert your mkv file into an mp4 and try that?
Also can you confirm the exact file names of both your movie and subtitle files, and that they are stored in the same folder.
Well, if i run evertyhing over VLC, that will work (talking about Mac). Kodi isn’t an option because there isn’t any Kodi app available for my Samsung TV.
The main point is to get subtitles over my TV - native Samsung player doesn’t show subtitles, nor the Plex (either over TV or Mac).
The only media app which is supported by MCM is Plex, and that one is also available for my TV.
Yes, the subtitles are in the same folder and with equal file names.
Plex seems to have some specific requirements for subtitle file naming - see here for more details.
Can you confirm if yours follow that requirement, or if not does changing the filename to match help?
Yes, everything is correctly and english subtitles are showing just fine. The problem turned out to be Croatian subtitles, and as it seems, they need to be coded in UTF-8 - and most of them aren’t.
That requires special extra plugin which needs to be installed via SSH.
That would be a question for WD tech support, but I suspect you’ll just get told that they don’t support it (I don’t think they support anything involving SSH). You may be out of luck anyway as the mechanics running the MCM isn’t full Linux, but there may be enough there to do what you need. However it’s not something I’ve ever tried, nor would I like to do so due to the inherent risks involved of screwing something up.
Is there any option for the system reinstall is something screws up? Like formatting/reinstalling Windows on PC…?
Again that would be a question for tech support.
I would doubt it would be easy, as it’s not quite the same scenario as rebuilding a PC for the access to the drives etc. If the dashboard is still available then the firmware could be reloaded (or the whole device hard factory reset, but that loses all data on the drives), but I suspect if things went south then you’d not have the dashboard access nor any simple way to “boot from USB” or something similar to act as an image source. SSH may be an option again depending on what screwed up, but it’s very difficult to say.
Basically this is why WD state that SSH isn’t supported and can void warranty claims, as it would be too easy otherwise to end up with a flood of devices that have been bricked by users adding, updating or tweaking stuff and ending up just breaking stuff.
