I have a WD elements 1TB P/N: WDBPCK0010BBK-01, that I have had for a few years (since Jan 2013) and has been working fine until now. It was formatted to PC but I have been using it with my Macbook Pro since initial purchase. It will not mount or show up in my finder or disk utility, but is visible in the system profiler. I have two other external harddrives which both work fine and I have tried three different cables as well as trying on a PC and another Macbook. It is 1TB and is almost 100% full of very important information such as documents, personal photos and videos, movies, etc so I really need to salvage the data if possible. When I first tried to connect it recently it made the usual starting up sound but seemed to get stuck and went in a pattern. After disconnecting and reconnection, it is now completely silent when it is connected, the only signal is the status light flashing like usual. I have tried using disk warrior but it does not recognise the HDD either. I have researched and seen a lot of suggestions to use a SATA-USB cable directly to it, but apparently this type of model is not compatible with that. I have also read of trying a new enclosure but I’m afraid of doing that an voiding the warranty. I have checked quotes to get a professional data recovery company to check it but the cost would be upwards of $500, and that’s only if the data is still there. Is there any other thing I can try and do to fix the problem myself or is my only chance a professional data recovery company? Does it even sound like my data would be preserved?
