WD DX4000 Recovery Started Stuck

hello friends
I have a WD DX 4000 device, which I replaced with two WD Blue hard drives, I am using the PANAM_SvrRecovery_1_7_5_17 image because I could not find the PANAM_SvrRecovery_1_7_6_21 version.

I go through the first 2 of the three steps without any errors, but in the third step, the device gets stuck on the Recovery Started message.

Before this, I didn’t know that I should add the hard drive model to the white list, and after realizing this, I did it and the problem of not recognizing the hard drives and shutting down in the first step was solved.

But I am sure that I do all the steps correctly, but the process does not proceed
I checked and found that the device receives an IP from the modem’s DHCP, but this IP cannot be pinged and I receive a time out message, but I see the assigned IP in the modem’s DHCP.

Also, the log of the device is as follows:

I connected the flash that was connected to the device to install the operating system to the virtual machine and I realized that the process is completely wrong.

thanks for help me

The IP is probably coming from the thumb drive. you need to make a new thumb drive each time for the middle step recreate. you can use the same one for the last step recover.

I would run disc part clean on each drive and do it over

In the middle stage, no partition is created, should a partition be created?

I did the middle step again, but at the end of it, I only get the Storage Ok message and still no IP ping
Please read the last line of the device log and according to that error, please help me
I checked that there is no record that I want to delete
thanks for your response

I think you may just have a bad download. Try the link below and see what happens. I do not remember or even think I knew if the partitions were created in the middle step. I think not. The hard part was getting a raid array which it looks like you have done. So I am leaning towards a bad download. If it still fails try a different thumb drive as some have found some drives simply did not work for them.

The thumb drive should get an IP, but the DX 4000 will not get one itself until it boots on iots own.

Thanks for the download link
I am sure of the correctness of the downloaded file
And after long investigations, I realized that the raid operation is not done correctly and I am getting the previous errors again
The action of creating a raid should be done in the middle or the second stage, but this is not done. I even checked the command codes for creating the raid and the appropriate partitions for creating the operating system, and I realized that no partition is created or deleted, and there is no code for creating raid and partition do not exist in PARTUTIL.VBS.
I am really confused and frustrated, I don’t know how to solve this problem.

I was beginning to think maybe it was the 1tb drives but this fellow did it. Looking through it, it seems he stopped at the same place as you until he did diskpart> clean on his drives.

I created a partition for testing to see if the NAS knows about the existence of the partition or takes the process to the next step.
But it was not successful and I deleted them again but I made sure that the raid was done correctly
According to this post, I connected the image port to the device and the output was still the same as before and it was stuck on Recovery Started.

Have you verified the MD5 Checksum of your download?

Yes, I am completely sure of the health of the file and the same problem existed on all three previous and lower versions

Can you post a screenshot of the checksum and what version of the file you are using?

Hi,

I did this operation a few times on ours Sentinel and now I do not recall anymore the exact details. However there were for sure three rules I had always to follow:

  1. All HD should be completely clean (i.e. Diskpart /clean to be done on an external PC on each hard disk if I recall correct)
  2. Both the two USB drives should be created brand new from the WD install ISO. If you re-use one most likely the install process will fail. That means that something goes wrong you have to re-install everything on the USB drive from the WD install (and modify whitelist.txt as needed)
  3. You have to be sure to amend the whitelist.txt file (I think there were at least two of them…probably with different names) including the s/n of the WD blue

Then you start with the first USB drive which I think creates the RAID (should be done in a few seconds), and then the second USB drive which installs Windows

Which is the size of the WD Blue?

Hi all,
First thank you all for all the help on the threads for this dx4000. They have been very helpful!

I am working to completely wipe and reinstall windows on my dx4000 that received a 0xD9 error. I do not need any of the data on the drives (4x4TB). I started the recovery process and have been stuck on “Initializing OK searching…” for a little over a day now. Following the manual, I see:

  1. Follow the additional instructions that appear on the screen to guide you through the recovery process:USING THE WD SENTINEL SERVER’S FEATURES 59 WD SENTINEL DX4000 ADMINISTRATOR’S GUIDE
a.Shut down the WD Sentinel server.
b.Insert the USB flash drive into one of the server’s USB ports.
c.Restart your server while pressing and holding the Recovery button on the back of the server.
d.Continue to hold the Recovery button until the LCD displays “INITIALIZING OK. LOADING RECOVERY.” Release the Recovery button.
e.Wait until the LCD displays “RECOVERY STARTED.”

  2. Return to the PC and follow the instructions by clicking Next. Make sure the PC is on the same network as the WD Sentinel server. The application searches for the WD Sentinel server and performs the final recovery. When the recovery is done, the default display (WDSentinel and IP address) appears on the LCD.

It doesn’t say in any of these steps that it should say “searching”. Is this referring to #10 and waiting for a PC? What is it searching for? Is the process taking a long time because of the size of my drives? I did not wipe the drives prior to this recovery. I feel like I am stuck between step d. and e.

I see DTMtech lists using 2 USB’s. Is that necessary?

Thanks again for all your help!

Hi,

Yes you need 2 USBs (or two steps with different software on the USB stick), first you need the USB to recreate storage (it will take not more than one minute) - which means the RAID is created. The 2nd USB stick is the recovery which installs Windows Storage Server. As already reported please be sure before the “recreate storage” step that you have all the HDs clean with diskpart /clean. Of course the WD type should be included in the list of allowed drives. If you will manage to recreate the storage it is very unlikely that you will have issues with the Recovery USB step (though it will take quite some time). USB stick should be 2.0, not 3.0.

kind regards

Davide

also make sure you have a dhcp server and just one/same subnet

Thank you both for your help!

It is set to DHCP. I have cleaned the disks (again) with diskpart/clean, ran the storage creation usb and got a “storage ok” message and am now running the recovery usb. It starts the recovery and gets all the way to Recovery Started (when I am suppposed to go back to the computer) but the software cannot find the NAS. I can login into my ASUS router and see it but it does show up with an assigned IP then disappears and comes back after 15-20 seconds or so.

So I decided to get an older router I had laying around. I connected just my PC and DX4000 to the router. I get a constant IP of 192.168.0.101 from the NAS and my computer is 192.168.0.100. So they should be able to see each other, right?! I tried to Remote into the ip and get nothing. I tried [ipaddress]/connect and get nothing…

Does this all (creating USB’s and running the tool) need to be done on Windows 7? I am currently using 10 to do all of this and do have an old laptop that has Windows 7 on it…

Again, Thank you for all of your help!

(Also I did check to make sure the drives are all white listed.)

Sounds like good progress. You will not be able to ip/remote etc until your worker pc finds the dx4000 and installs. Ping might work though

Win 10 is fine but make sure you do not have any 3rd party av or firewall. As I type I had the thought you may need to enable SMB v1

Once someone tried forever and never got it and simply changed pc’s and it worked fine. So you may want to try your Win7

Hi,

I sometimes had issues like yours and often succeded in the same way you tried (i.e. use an alternative router and connect only PC and NAS). I wonder if having an internet connection as well might help. Windows version should not be an issue but it is definitely worth to try with different PC or laptop.

First off, Thank you both (Gramps and DTMtech) for all of your help!

I wanted to come back to tell my process to get this thing going. Ultimately, I believe changing PC’s on a separate router is what did it but I will run through my issues and resolutions although they may not be in the exact order that I encountered them.

  1. 2.0 USB’s
  • I ended up using 2 different types of 2.0 USB’s. First was a 16GB PNY. Again after multiple attempts and no progress I purchased a different brand (SamData 16GB) and they seemed to work. Not sure if that was the ultimate issue but it seemed to work better.
  1. Cleaning the discs
  • I couldn’t tell you how many times I took the drives (4) and diskpart/clean them. Also one thing to mention is that in Disk Management you should see no partitions but I also left them not initialized or given a drive name. Just a clean, unused drive. At first I was reassigning them letters and I couldn’t get through the storage step. Also to note that each time you clean them you need to make a new Storage USB as there are log files that are saved on the USB and it wont work. I believe if you don’t do this, you will get to the end and instead of “Storage created successfully” you get “Storage OK”. You want it to say it was created successfully.
  1. Restore
  • After getting the storage successfully setup, I worked on restoring the OS. I had a separate USB that I created as the recovery USB. Seemed like a long time to get to this point LOL.
  1. Connection to the server
  • After I started the Recovery I would get to “Recovery Started” and would go back to my computer to see if the software could find the server. I could never see it. No bueno. After going back a cleaning the discs again and recreating USB multiple times I would still get the same thing. I found some forums about the network port issues but I did have network lights blinking. I decided to pull out a old TPLink router and connect just that and the PC. Still couldn’t see it. So I decided to haul up a different laptop that has Windows 7 and figured I should start over. I recreated the USB’s on the Win7 computer, cleaned the discs and tried again! Server found! Woo! BUT when I ran the recovery, I got an error toward the end :frowning:
The Win7 computer is SUPER old and was pretty slow so I thought maybe it was the laptop as I had seen that others had done this with other windows versions. I ultimately went back to different Win10 computer to create USB’s and run the setup (different from the orig Win10 computer) and had it connected to the router with just the server and internet access.
  1. Recovery Error
  • The recovery would start, get close to the end and I would get a “Could Not Reset to Default Error 0x80070570”. Boy was that frustrating. So I looked around the forums again. I ran into Gramps saying AGAIN that it is important to see if you have a good download (I am a noob and don’t know how to check for this). This brings me to my last point.
  1. Finding a good copy of the Recovery software.
  • I started with a link I had found in one of the many forums that I read. After not succeeding with multiple attempts I read more forums. I kept seeing multiple times that you need a good download, I decided to reach out to support who gave me this link to the software on the WD website (I am in the US so I used the PANAM version)

This was my crazy process and issues that I troubleshooted to get this dino going! Hope this helps others by putting things I ran into and searched the forums for in one place. Good luck everyone!
