WD Blue HDD Beeping — Not Spinning, Not Detected: Any Recovery Ideas Before Opening?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for expert insights or real recovery experiences before I consider giving up on this drive.

The Problem:

  • Drive: WD Blue 3.5” SATA (internal)
  • Symptoms:
    • Sudden failure while copying files via Windows Explorer
    • Started emitting a mechanical “bzeet bzeet” beep (not from speaker, clearly internal)
    • No spinning noise, no detectable platter movement
    • Not recognized in Disk Management, Device Manager, or BIOS

What I’ve tried:

  • Several external USB enclosures, all with external power
  • Direct SATA + power connection to tower PC (former system where drive was used for years)
  • Spin-up assist (gentle clockwise motion while powering on) — no change
  • Multiple PCs and power supplies tested
  • Attempted SMART polling (via HWiNFO, CrystalDiskInfo, etc.) — drive not seen

Remaining considerations:

  • Some suggest trying slight voltage boost via adjustable lab-grade power supply. Has anyone actually done this with success on a WD Blue?
  • Is there any known firmware or controller behavior that might mimic this kind of failure?

Drive details:

  • WD Blue, 3.5”, SATA
  • NTFS, with two partitions

Any and all help or similar-case success stories welcome.

My goal is just to get a single successful spin-up and RAW copy.
I’m willing to try technical procedures, preferably they don’t involve opening the drive.

Thanks in advance!

Your disk is likely close to DOA. Get a different disk and try copying as much as you can.

It sounds like stiction (heads stuck to platters) or a seized spindle motor.
