WD Blue Caviar 500GB WD50000AAKS Taking forever re-installing Windows XP

I’m having some troubles trying to re-install fresh copy of Windows XP onto my WD Blue 500GB HD.  The reaction time is tremendously slow.  Took me more than 12 hours to finish installing a fresh XP install.  When I was selecting on the Windows pre-installing options (e.g User name, etc etc) it was taking up at least 15 minutes to move onto the next page.  This was occuring on every single input!  I got so tired after waiting for 12 hours and swap out this HD with a different HD.  Installation was a go and it was all completed in less than 1 hour.

Has anyone gone through this same trouble that I’ve experienced?  I suspect this HD is malfunctioning.  I bought it in Jan of this year.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

your WD5000AAKS is Meh, full bad sector, DEFECT product, almost broken, or already broken … I have WD5000AAKS-00A7B0 for 5-6 month. then one day (last month) something wrong with this hdd, then i use chkdsk read only (without /f) and it just never ending scan, same reaction as your hdd… then i return to my local store for warranty to WD central… and today My WD5000AAKS is Return!!!. guess what, Shiny new AAKS, They replace my AAKS With NEW AAKS… so my WD5000AAKS-00A7B0 changed to WD5000AAKS-00V1A0… and have better performance too… my old AAKS just 86 MB/s and my new AAKS is 130.8 MB/s!!!.. GOOD…

The bad thing is i have to backup my data from My old AAKS by BUYING another hdd  (WDC Black WD5001AALS-00J7B1)…

another bad thing is My WDC Black WD5001AALS-00J7B1 IS slower (92 MB/s) than may New AAKS…

I thought  WDC Black is suppose to be faster than WDC Blue…

these aren’t good drives. mine just lasted for a month, if that. i returned it to the store today and i hope i’ll get a better one too…

unfortunately, i couldn’t even create a backup so i lost most of my data because of this bull**bleep**.

Hi, i’m in the same situation, i can’t read at high speed on my WD Blue 500GB, (3765kb/seg) this is too slow!!

tried the WD diagnostic tool and it said that there where bad sectors on the surface, then i clicked to repair them by replacing them with the extra sectors on the same track, it was a completely waste of time. actually 36 hours.
Then i tried a low level fornat with some soft that i found out there and it fails at the end too (it doesn’t repaired anything). Both toke 36hs to finish the entire procedure.
Now i am trying with another soft HDD Regenerator, wich software developers says that is capable of regenerate the bad sectors and rescue the data stored in those sectors. it recovered 45 sectors (by now…), and, you can stop and resume the checking from a given sector or mb position…
when it finish, i’ll tell if is worthless or not… (this is my last attempt before throwing out the window :P)

i hope you find it useful…

Sorry for my english…

IF YOU HAVE A WD CAVIAR BLU AND YOU ARE FACING ANY BAD SECTORS PROBLEMS THE BEST THING IS JUST TO REPLACE THE DRVIE. YOU CAN TRY TO USE SOFTWARES LIKE (TEST DISK) THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FIND ON ANY BROWSER OR ANOTHER SOFTWARE BUT IT IS NOT GUARRANTEE THAT ITS GONNA WORK.

JUST REPLACE IT SINCE THIS DRIVE DOESN'T HAS ANY JUMPERS SETTINGS FOR WINDOWS XP

You may want to download and run the DLG diagnostics and test the health of your drive.  Abnormal performance may be an indicator of a failing drive.
