WD 1TB My Book Not Working on my computer

I’ve had my Western Digital My Book 1TB for only a couple of weeks, so I decided to do a format on it so I can just get rid of what I had backed up so I can have a clean hard drive. Also, my hard drive is brand new out of the box, so when I did the format using the WD SmartWare, my computer didn’t recognize the hard drive and on WD SmartWare, it didn’t recongnize it either and said I needed to update. So, if you can, please give me the solution because I don’t want this to be a waste of $100.
