From what I can see, this is not a new topic. Yet I have not discovered a resolution or an explanation.
I recently bought a WD Elements 10TB external USB drive. I use it to back up my desktop computer using Acronis True Image (or whatever they are calling themselves this week). I monitor my disk drives with CrystalDiskInfo. It told me my WD drive was exceeding 50 degrees C.
This is a recent purchase because I was replacing a Seagate 10TB external drive which had displayed exactly the same symptoms. WTF?
Everything I have read suggests 50 degrees or higher is too high. Yet this seems to be the standard, out of the box, behaviour, for both WD and Seagate.
In the past I would physically disconnect the drive and reconnect before a scheduled back-up (if I remembered). I am currently trialing both Nirsoft usbdevview and “usb safely remove” as a means of managing the device so as to avoid overheating. But I really dislike such manual intervention to avoid a problem that should not exist in the first place.
Today, when I saw the temperature climbing, I discovered an unnecessary Acronis service hammering the device. I disabled that service. As an aside I loath companies like Acronis that add such things without consultation.
But, really, these devices should be able to handle any ordinary load without overheating. What is going on? Has anyone ever got any intelligible answer from WD (or Seagate for that matter)?
