I am not a happy bunny as before starting to back-up my WD DL4100 NAS this morning I thought I would have a little clear out. So I pressed ‘Clear’ to empty the NASs recycle bin, then rebooted it. After waiting for it to reboot and upon returning to my computer I noticed that I had no access to any shares. On further investigation MY WHOLE DISK VOLUME HAD GONE. WTF WD?!!!
Seriously need this sorting. Thankfully I have a one month old backup but this sort of thing should not be happening.
I guess my main questions are:
i) are there any logs I can check to see exactly what happened to make sure this doesn’t happen again and;
ii) what are the chances of recovering the volume?
Did you manage to get your files back? I’ll take a stab at a guess. The configuration of the server service daemon got screwed, but the file structure on the volume may still be intact.
I was very lucky as I had a backup of the drive and local backups of the remaining recent files so I didn’t need to attempt to recover the data. Hence no exploration was made and I didn’t found out what the underlying problem was.
In the end WD were great (hats off to you WD) as they replaced the unit FOC without quibble. Amazon also replaced the extra disks that I had purchased from them FOC. It was a shame that it happened but the outcome was satisfactory.
