I purchased the WD HDTV Live box to be able to stream my DVD collection from my HTPC to another room through the network. I have a solid connection and can stream Netflix with ease. I am also experiencing the problems others have with the inability to stream VOB files smoothly. AVI and MKV formats stream fine but VOB’s not so good. When I first setup the unit this wasn’t a problem but a day or two later it started. I hadn’t connected the firmware update as being related but now see that this is where the problem started.
The problem seems to have to do with opening a video object file versus a container (avi, mkv, etc.). I’m not sure how the file streams are handled by the firmware so I am not able to comment on specific details. However, the discontinuity of support for this issue/thread with only one point of contact responding to the issue on the forums and no official statement from the company suggests a limited future for the device/division of the company. This is unfortunate.
Except for this one fatal flaw I have found the unit is versatile and smoothly operating and would say so in any user comment on the device. I do not hate the company for their apparent lack of resolve on the matter however it is disconcerting that the forum on the matter has been locked without any resolution, only a work around that doesn’t work for everyone.
I would expect a company as established as western digital to be more responsive to upholding the quality of work and support for that work they have shown in the past. Perhaps this is a bad sign as to what may be expected from future products they “support”.
Hopeful but dissatisfied customer.
