USB device not recognized

I have successfully used WD external drives for nightly backing up my computer. This has worked well for many years.

I recently bought a 20TB My Book Duo and everything worked well initially. But now, I get an error message every morning that the USB device is not recognized and that the backup failed. Device manager reports a “unknown USB device (port reset failed)” error message.

When I reboot, the drive is recognized and I am able to manually backup my computer to the external drive.

I have switched the drive to use various USB ports without any success.

I use Windows 10 Home edition version 1709.

Thank you for any thoughts as to what the issue might be.

Hi,

I recall a similar USB problem. I think Microsoft added some software that caused problems. Suggest you search USB errors on Microsoft.

Cliff

Thanks, Clifford.

I tried your suggestion, and ended up doing the following:

– I ran the Microsoft “Automatically diagnose and fix Windows USB problems” tool, but when I had the “port reset failed” error and not.
– I checked to see if all my drivers are up to date. They are.
– I uninstalled various USB Hubs and rebooted.

But I still have the issue.

One final comment. Device manager reports the following:

– Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
– A USB port reset request failed.

Assuming nobody can help with this, what should my next steps be. Return the drive for the supplier or return to WD.
