USB backup in OS5 does not recognize my USB device(s)

My Cloud device is MyCloud Mirror Gen 2 running latest ver of OS5. I’ve installed the USB backup app provided in the dashboard. Does my external USB device have to be connected to the MyCloud Mirror device in order for this app to work? I was hoping it would work with any USB device in my home network. If it in fact does work with any home network USB device, why does the USB app not recognize any of my USB devices in the network? Is there a setting or settings that I am missing?

Thank you for the info! As I understand it from the instructions, I would have to plug my external NTFS Drive into the My Cloud Drive instead of my PC in order for me to backup in either direction. Not sure I want to run a backup drive through a backup drive to backup my files. Am I correct that this is what is required?
